The first of the ten good deeds is to release life, and the first of the ten evils is killing. The merit of freeing life is the greatest, it is direct and quick, and the power to change destiny is the most significant.
Among all the dharma taught by the Buddha, bodhicitta is the foundation, and among all the virtuous dharma with outflows, none has greater merit and virtue than the release of life. All other good deeds will have no merit if one's own mind is not pure. However, when releasing a life, regardless of whether one's mind is pure or impure, the actions will directly benefit all living beings. Therefore, there will be incredible good results, even if it is to save a life. Merit cannot be measured. Because these released sentient beings have been temporarily relieved from the unbearable pain of being killed, and after being blessed by reciting the name of the Buddha and mantras during the release, these sentient beings will eventually achieve the status of non-regression. (Therefore, when releasing lives, do not forget to recite the name of the Buddha! This point will be discussed specifically later)
Nagarjuna Bodhisattva said in "The Great Wisdom": "Among all other sins, killing is the most serious, and among all the merits, killing is the most serious. Among them, life-release is the first. "Master Gansang Quzha of Tibet said: "We should stop killing and rescue and release lives. Among all the good deeds of body and speech, life-release has the greatest merit." If you can release lives, you can also get them from the Vajra Hell. relief.
The Buddhist scriptures say that there are seven virtues in humans and gods: "Noble caste, strict appearance, longevity, no disease, excellent fate, wealth and wealth, and broad wisdom." Among them, the fundamental cause of longevity and disease-free is life release. , releasing animals is also a supporting condition for the other five virtues. In particular, if you want to live longer, you should release lives. "Praise to the Release of Life" says: "If you want to prolong life, you must release it. This is the true principle of the cycle. If he dies, you save him, and if you die, heaven will save you. There is no difference between prolonging life and having children." Just stop killing and release lives. "Maitreya Bodhisattva's verse says: "I advise you to release lives diligently, and you will eventually live a long life. If you have the bodhicitta, you will be rescued in great disasters."
Master Hanshan's "Releasing Lives" verse. ' said: People love their longevity, and things also love their lives. Release lives in harmony with the heart of heaven, release lives in obedience to the Buddha's order, release lives to avoid three disasters, release lives to escape the nine horizontal directions, release lives to have a long life, release lives to have a prosperous official and fortune. Release lives to have prosperous children, release lives to celebrate families, release lives to have no worries, release lives to have fewer diseases. Release lives to resolve grievances, release sins to purify them, release lives to Guanyin’s compassion, release lives to the Samantabhadra practice, release lives and kill, the results will be as clear as a mirror. Release lives and recite the Buddha's name, and thousands of people will achieve success. ('Three disasters': 1. Disaster of swords and soldiers. 2. Disaster of disease and epidemic. 3. Disaster of famine. 'Nine horizontals': 1. There is no cure for illness. 2. Killing by king's method. 3. Non-human beings take away the essence. 4. Fire. Burned. 6. Being eaten by evil animals. 9. Being trapped by hunger and thirst. Merit and virtues: no tribulations caused by swords and wars, all auspiciousness, long life and good health, many sons and daughters, all Buddhas are happy, all things are grateful, no disasters, rebirth in heaven, elimination of bad karma, peace in all seasons, endless good feelings.
Master Hongyi also once "asked you first, first, do you want to prolong your life? Second, do you want to cure your illness? Third, do you want to avoid it? Fourth, do you want to have a child? If you wish, now there is a The simplest and easiest way to do it is to release lives.”
Khenpo Sodarji said that anyone who releases lives will gain four fruits of merit: those who release the fruits of extraordinary ripeness will be freed from the suffering of the three lower realms; The lower level of motivation, with a small amount of release, can be transferred to the human realm. The medium level of intention, with a medium amount of release, can be transferred to the desire realm. If the superior level of intention, with an extremely large amount of release, can be reincarnated in the formless realm. world, and gradually escape from the sea of ??suffering in reincarnation; the fruit of the release of life is divided into two types: the first is that those who experience the fruit of the stream will become long-lived and disease-free in the future lives; the second is those who walk with the fruit of the stream, when they get human bodies in the future, they like to stop killing and release lives, and have compassion and kindness. Those who practice the supreme Bodhisattva path; those who release lives will increase the results. Those who release lives will not be reincarnated in abyss and dangerous places in the future. The realm of reincarnation will be a happy and beautiful land, with food, flowers, fruits, etc.; those who release lives will use the fruits, in all lifetimes, Increase the goodness of the lives released.
In the process of releasing lives, because releasing lives, spending money to buy things to redeem lives is a donation of wealth; because releasing lives, we take refuge with all living beings, repent together, recite Buddha together, and dedicate together, it is a donation of Dharma. ; Because releasing lives relieves the pain and fear of being caught, struggling and resenting before death, it is a fearless giving; the three kinds of giving, releasing lives are all available, the merits of releasing lives are really incredible!
The Treatise on the Merits and Virtue of Releasing Lives says: "If you want the happiness of a good place, releasing lives can bring blessings to humans and heaven; if you want to attain serenity, releasing lives will lead to the fruit of Sravaka Arhat; if you release lives with bodhicitta, you will gain The cause of attaining Buddhahood; if you want your guru to live in this world, you can feel the guru's long-lasting presence in this world by doing life rebirth; if you want to live a long life, rebirth becomes a special and long-lasting method; this has countless merits."
Life rebirth is also the cause. The main reason for rebirth in the Pure Land, "Bardo Salvation Commentary" says: "If you release lives in this life, when you reach the Bardo, the living beings you release will come to you to guide you, and you will be reborn in the Pure Land of your choice; if you kill living beings, then they will be reborn in the Pure Land." The living beings killed will appear extremely angry at that time, and they will be forcefully led into hell. The Sutra of Infinite Light Merits and Ornaments of Life states that there are ten causes of rebirth. Although these ten causes have different explanations, release and urging people to release lives are often interpreted as two of them. People who often release lives can be directly reborn in the land of bliss. For example, Tibetan Chamei Rinpoche spent his whole life urging others to release lives, and when he passed away, he was directly reborn in the land of bliss in the west. In the Song Dynasty of Han Dynasty, Master Yongming used to buy fish, shrimps, etc. and release them with great effort. Later, with this merit, he was reborn in the Paradise of Paradise and achieved a superior life. Such stories are recorded in many histories.
If you encounter a serious disease and are close to death, only by releasing the animal can your life be prolonged and disease-free. Once upon a time, there was a Wang Dalin in Suzhou. He had great kindness and compassion and often released animals. Whenever he saw children in the village catching and playing with fish, birds and other animals, he would try his best to dissuade them and give money to release them. He usually advised people: "Young man At this time, one must cultivate the virtue of cherishing kindness, living things, and not letting him develop the bad habit of being cruel and fond of killing." In this way, he advised people to do good and stop evil throughout his life. Later, when he was seriously ill and was about to die, he became holy in his own state of awareness. His Majesty told him: "You will have great merits by freeing others during your lifetime, and you will be able to increase your blessings and extend your life for thirty-six years." So he was resurrected and passed away without any illness at the age of ninety-seven. The list goes on.
