Bear Grylls, born in 1974 in Bembridge City, Isle of Wight, England, is an explorer, presenter, author, speaker, black belt in karate, and former British Army Special Forces soldier.
Joined the Discovery Channel in 2006 and was nicknamed "The Man at the Top of the Food Chain" because of the amazing things he ate on the Discovery Channel program "Survival in the Wild".
In 2006, Bell hosted 'ManVsWild,' a subsection of the Discovery Channel, where he helped launch the AlphaCourse globally with films and commercials. In 'ManVsWild', Bell goes deep into some of the world's most inaccessible areas with his meager gear. Showing people how to survive. Places traveled include the jungles of Costa Rica, the deserts of Utah, the Pacific Islands, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Alps, Kenya, and Alaska.
In 2007, with sponsorship from GKN, Bell and Parajet's Gero Cazzo became the first person to successfully fly over Everest using a powered paraglider. The $1 million raised from the challenge was donated to Global Angels and other charities that care for the world's poorest children.
Bell made a series of eight programs for the UK's Channel 4 (in partnership with Global Discovery) called Born to Survive, The Belgraves. It was a huge hit in the UK when it was broadcast. The TV program was accompanied by the publication of a survival book about the "boy ego" called "Born Survivor".
The book was in the top ten best sellers in the Sunday Times for ten weeks. Work began on a second season of Born to Survive across America.
In 2008, Bell continued with Wilderness Survival and Born Survivor Belgreaves, covering sixteen regions of the globe, from the deserts of Africa to Indonesia, Belize, Canada's Yukon, Iraq, and more. Bell took his few teammates to climb a remote and inaccessible peak in Antarctica.
Funds raised will benefit the GlobalAngels Children's Charitable Foundation, and the expedition involves kite-skiing in strong winds, jet-skiing with jet-ethanol, and paragliding with electric power, all while controlling your footwork. During this expedition, Bell was caught in the air as the kite ski parachute reached speeds of 50 kilometers per hour, and when he landed, he broke his shoulder.
