The adult spicebush is 15 to 16 millimeters long, with a wingspan of 36 to 40 millimeters and a green body; the compound eye is black-brown; the egg is flat and oval, yellowish-green, and the mature larva is slightly rectangular, yellow at first, and then a little larger for yellowish-green to green; the pupa is ovoid, creamy-white to yellowish at first, and then gradually changing to yellowish-brown; the cocoon is oval and hard, and the color is more with the color of the bark of the host tree, generally from grayish-brown to dark brown.
