Wash the glutinous rice and soak it in water until the rice grains can be easily crushed with your fingers. Drain the water, lay a wet steamer cloth on the steamer, pour the rice in, pat the surface flat and poke some holes with chopsticks, then wait for the water to boil before putting the steamer on to steam. Check the amount of rice. Set the steaming time. If you want to make glutinous rice cakes, steam them for a longer time. If you want to eat rice cakes with distinct grains, steam them for a little longer.
