Fennel is usually planted in spring (March and April) and autumn (September). Because fennel has good cold tolerance, it is very good to plant fennel after beginning of autumn. However, some growers will postpone planting fennel seedlings according to local climatic conditions, but it is best not to exceed mid-September.

2. Planting method of fennel seedlings

(1) variety selection

Fennel is generally divided into fennel and bulbous fennel. Fennel has many varieties, short growth period, light fragrance and good taste. It is generally recommended to choose fennel for planting. Fennel can also be selected according to market demand.

(2) Soil selection and fertilization

Fennel likes to live in sandy soil, which is fertile and has good drainage performance. Before planting fennel, sufficient fertilizer should be applied and fully decomposed farmland fertilizer should be selected. After applying base fertilizer, it can be planted by deep ploughing and soil preparation.

(3) Planting management

Fennel seeds are very small, so they need to be raised before planting. After sowing, appropriate amount of sand can be added and enough water poured to make fennel seedlings evenly distributed. Generally, fennel seeds can emerge 7 days after sowing.

(4) Seedling management

Fennel grows slowly in the early stage and rapidly in the later stage. In order to increase the yield, the growth rate of fennel should be increased at the initial stage of growth. The main methods to improve the growth rate of fennel in the early stage are weed control and water and fertilizer control in the later stage.

(5) Harvest

The best harvesting height of fennel is about 20 cm, and it can be harvested once or twice. If harvested, fennel can be cut off with its stems and roots. If it is harvested twice, the stems of fennel should be cut off by one centimeter from the soil, and watered and fertilized in time 2 ~ 3 days after harvesting to promote the secondary growth of fennel.
