The National Agricultural and Forestry By-products Quality Supervision and Inspection Center tested the soluble solids (the main indicator reflecting sugar content) of Uni-President Green Tea, Master Kong Green Tea, Master Kong Ice Black Tea and Coca-Cola.
The test results show that both green teas are 4.35, and Master Kong iced black tea is 9.735, which is close to Coca-Cola’s 10.86. After converting the sugar content into calories, the testers were surprised to find that a bottle of Master Kong iced black tea has more calories than a can of Coca-Cola! A bottle of green tea has half the calories of a can of Coca-Cola!
1 gram of sugar can produce 4 kilocalories. Based on this ratio, the test results show that a 490ml bottle of iced black tea contains about 180 calories, which is higher than a 355ml can of Coca-Cola (about 140 to 150 calories). According to another report, Hong Kong experts tested 30 green tea samples and found that 500 ml of "Uni-President Iced Green Tea" contains 9 teaspoons of sugar and has 9.2 calories, which is higher than a can of Coke (about 140 to 150 calories). Therefore, experts remind consumers to be careful of "the more you drink, the fatter you will get" and remind patients with diabetes or those who want to lose weight to pay attention to the ingredients of drinks.
