Eye Care Day was proposed by a professor at Tianjin University in 1992.

On September 25, 1992, a professor of ophthalmology and a professor of epidemiology at Tianjin Medical University jointly proposed a national initiative. And the first national symposium on Single Mask Day was held in Tianjin. This initiative was widely responded to by various ophthalmology circles and ophthalmologists, and it was decided that May 5 every year would be the National Eye Care Day, and on May 5, 1993, the first national Eye Care Day publicity campaign was held in Tianjin.

Influenced by Tianjin, first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou held eye care day publicity and charity clinics on the same day. As a result, in 1996, 12 national ministries and commissions jointly issued a notice establishing Eye Care Day as June 6 every year and as one of the national holidays.

Significance of the establishment of Eye Care Day:

In recent years, the myopia rate of China's population has been gradually increasing, with the myopia rate of primary school students at around 30%, that of middle school students at around 50%, but that of high school students reaching 70%. More and more students are wearing glasses and entering the classroom, so eye protection is becoming increasingly important to the nation.

For the students, most of the excessive use of eyes is in the process of learning, too hard, or through improper way, the eyes do not get a normal rest, in this case, the protection of eyes is urgent. Therefore, the establishment of the National Eye Care Day, to a certain extent, the dissemination of knowledge of eye care, but also set up a series of activities on the theme of eye care day.
