The Huaiyang Canal is also known as the Li Canal.
The Huaiyang Canal between Huai'an and Yangzhou of the Grand Canal is also known as General Purpose Canal, Li-Canal, Qushui, Hanjiang River, Zhongdushui, and Shanyangdushu, etc. It refers to the section of the river that runs from Huai'an City (the intersection of the Grand Canal of China and the ancient Huaihe River) to Yangzhou City (the intersection of the Grand Canal of China and the Yangtze River) of Jiangsu Province, which is more than one hundred and seventy kilometers in total length.
The Huaiyang Canal is a man-made canal communicating the traffic of the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River, which was built in the thirty-fourth year of King Jing of the Zhou Dynasty (486 years ago), and has been an important waterway in central~north Jiangsu since ancient times. After it was built, it has been cut and straightened many times, separated from the lake and river, and rerouted. Hydrological Characteristics
According to the Records of Huai'an City, the Huaiyang Canal is responsible for draining the floodwaters of the Huaihe River into the river, and citing the Huaihe River for irrigation; it is also the trunk line of north-south shipping and south-north water transfer, with a maximum flow rate of about 200 cubic meters per second.
According to the water level data of Gaoyou County Records from 1916 to 1985, the maximum water level of the Gaoyou section of the Li Canal appeared on August 15, 1928, at 9.46 meters, and the minimum water level appeared on September 9, 1926, at 5.63 meters; the minimum water level appeared on November 18, 1933, at 3.10 meters, and the maximum water level appeared on December 31, 1946, at 6.10 meters, and the maximum water level appeared on December 31, 1946, at 6.10 meters, and the maximum water level appeared on December 31, 1946, at 6.10 meters.
