Morphological features:
Wild rice has stout fibrous roots, and the culms are highly erect, 1-2 meters tall, about 1 cm in diameter, with many nodes and adventitious roots at the basal nodes. Leaf sheaths are longer than the internodes, thick, with small transverse veins; ligules membranous, ca. 1.4 cm long, apex pointed; leaf blades flat and broad, 50-90 cm long, 15-30 mm wide.
Panicle, 30-50 cm long, branches mostly clustered, ascending, and fruiting; spikelets 10-15 mm long, compressed on both sides, embedded in the lower part of the inflorescence or in the upper part of the branches, lemmas with 5 scabrid veins, awns 20-30 mm long, lemmas with 3 veins. The caryopsis is cylindrical, ca. 12 mm long, the embryo small, 1/8 as long as the substrate.
