Panicum miliaceum. It was called water chestnut in ancient times, also known as horseshoe. Seeds can be pressed for oil, old stems can be used as medicine, and leaves can extract aromatic oil. The plant height is about 1 m. The stem is square, grooved, multi-branched, hard and smooth at the base, with white hairs on the upper part. The leaves are ovate, with sharp apex and glandular spots on the back. The stems and leaves are green. Racemes terminal or lateral. Nutlets are round, commonly known as perilla, yellowish brown and reticulate.
It is not only nutritious, but also contains perillaldehyde, perillalcohol, linalool, menthol, perillenone, limonene, eugenol and other chemicals. It has many functions such as special fragrance, sterilization and antisepsis, and it is mild, spicy and non-toxic. Its roots, stems, leaves, flowers and seeds can all be used as medicine, so it is a commonly used Chinese medicine.
Its leaves, named Suye, have the functions of relieving exterior syndrome, dispelling cold, promoting qi circulation and regulating stomach, and are mainly used to treat wind-cold common cold, stuffy nose, headache, cough, fullness in chest and abdomen, nausea and vomiting, and detoxification of fish and crab poison.
