1. On the vast sea, the wind rolls and gathers dark clouds. Between the dark clouds and the sea, the petrels, like black lightning, were flying proudly.
2. A moment later its wings touched the waves, a moment later it arrowed straight toward the dark clouds, and it cried out,--and it was in the brave cry of the bird that the dark clouds heard joy.
3. In this cry -- full of longing for the storm! In this cry the dark clouds hear the strength of anger, the fire of passion and the confidence of victory.
4. The seagulls groaned before the storm,--groaned as they scuttled across the sea, trying to hide their fear of the storm in the depths of the sea.
5. The sea-ducks, too, groaned, -- they, the sea-ducks, could not enjoy the joys of life's battles: the rumble of thunder terrified them.
6. The stupid penguins, timidly hiding their fat bodies under the cliffs? Only the haughty petrels, bravely, freely, fly over the foaming sea!
7. The clouds grew darker and lower, and pressed straight down toward the sea, while the waves sang as they rushed high into the air to meet the thunder.
8. The thunder boomed. The waves called in angry spume, and fought with the gale. Behold, the gale clutched up layers of huge waves and flung them viciously against the cliffs, dashing these great chunks of emerald into dust and mist and splinters.
9. The petrels shrieked and soared, like black lightning, arrowing through the dark clouds, their wings skimming the foam of the waves.
10.Behold, it flies, like a spirit,--a high, black spirit of the storm,--it laughs, and it trumpets again? It laughs at the dark clouds, and it trumpets for joy!
11. The sensitive spirit,--which had long heard the sleepiness in the thunder's fury,--was convinced that the clouds could not hide the sun,--yes, could not!
12. Howling winds? The thunder roars?
13. A heap of dark clouds, like green flames, burned on the bottomless sea. The sea seized the lightning's arrow-light and quenched them in its own abyss. These shadows of lightning, living like a fiery serpent, slithered and swam in the sea, and disappeared in a flash.
14, - The storm! The storm is coming!
15, It is the brave petrels, flying high and proud over the roaring sea, in the midst of the lightnings; it is the victorious prophet who cries out:
16, - Let the storm come on more fiercely!
