Why I came to FIU—— To the younger brothers and sisters of South China Institute of Technology

this is my second year in America.

Just like an article I wrote for the school admissions office in November, "It's only midsummer from now on", I came to this hot southern city in the United States, which means that my whole study abroad life will be in midsummer. It's the twelfth lunar month. Not long ago, the first snow in Beijing swept through the circle of friends, and yesterday's first snow in Hangzhou told me that on the other side of the earth, winter came. At this time, I am still wearing shorts and hiding in the air-conditioned Starbucks to type this text. I gradually found that I was already familiar with American life by accident.

Until recently, there were still many younger brothers and sisters with my shadow, who were curious to ask me all kinds of questions about studying abroad and Miami. Of course, the most frequently asked question is why I chose the major of hotel management and FIU.

I know that the answer to the word "fate" is somewhat perfunctory and artificial. In fact, in fact, that's the answer, but I've been too busy with all kinds of big and small things to answer. Just recently, when I met a little bottleneck at work, I thought about this problem. At least I have an explanation.

two years ago, when we applied to go abroad, there were three cooperation programs for 2+2 dual undergraduate degrees in this major, namely Purdue University in Indiana, WU,Stout University in Wisconsin, and FIU in Florida.

From the name alone, the name Florida International University is the least well-known, and it sounds particularly fake, so it is very difficult to find it on the comprehensive ranking list. But at that time, in our group of Chinese workers going abroad, students who came to FIU accounted for an overwhelming majority in number.

I don't know what other people think, and I don't know exactly what I think, but at least I know what I don't want.

First of all, there have been strategic measures and long-term plans for the construction of a new socialist countryside. As a student of the tertiary industry, there is no need for me to visit and study in areas where the primary industry is relatively developed in capitalism. In short, I came to America to see the world, and I will come to big cities in the future. This is the primary reason why I chose Miami.

It is work and life that pay equal attention to study. I ask myself that I am not a so-called "research-oriented talent". In other words, I learn these things, and I also hope to have on-the-spot knowledge and practice. Only by choosing the right location can I get such a thing. As a world-famous tourist city, Miami is not only the home port of many luxury cruise companies, but also a treasure mine with extremely rich tourism and human resources. Casinos, nightclubs and hotels of major brands are flourishing here, and they entertain tourists from all over the country and even the world every year ... Anyway, it's right to have too many.

Since there are so many things related to this industry here, there are naturally many opportunities for practice and knowledge, so compared with living in wheat fields and remote towns where birds don't shit, the benefits are self-evident. There are many choices when you go to play, such as gun shops, shooting ranges, skydiving centers, Disney and Universal Studios, blue pools with the same sky and sea ... No, there are many bars and nightclubs (including 18+ strip clubs), and even restaurants with morning tea! Two of the top ten best shopping malls in the United States are in this area, surfing, fishing, camping, and so on. By the way, at the southernmost tip of the United States, the Florida keys, where the independence farce of "Conch * * * and China" was staged, are also here, with the presidential palace, naval base and Hemingway's former residence, which is only a few tens of miles away from Cuba.

I didn't ask you to come and play! Ahem, I mean, there will be more choices when you come to work, but you will earn glistening dollars!

second, it's time to talk about the school after the location. Although it appears occasionally in domestic materials, it will not be introduced too much. When I came here, I found that this public school, which is recognized by the Ministry of Education of China, has as many as six campuses. There are two in Miami, an undersea research center in Florida and a campus in Tianjin, China.

The top four schools in the national wine management major have their own advantages. The first criterion for professional teaching is naturally the coverage of its professional courses and the scope of cooperative enterprises. I have to explain in advance to the children who are going to choose this major and the parents who have misunderstood it, what is the hotel management major. In China, our major in South China University of Technology is called Tourism Management, although it focuses on the hotel industry to a great extent in education. Many parents associate tourism management with the profession of tour guide. But in fact, the English name of this major is Hospitality Management, and the Chinese translation should be hospitality service (leisure industry) management, which covers such fields as luxury cruise ships, casinos, restaurants, hotels, tourism, exhibitions, resorts and clubs, and red wine. And these sub-fields can be learned in the professional courses of the school.

The difference between the professors in our school and many professors in China is that, in addition to the necessary high academic qualifications, there are also quite rich industry experience, so when teaching students, there are also a lot of knowledge they have summed up from practice and even lessons they have failed. In a luxury catering management course that I took, our professor is also the CEO of the company he runs. Our final exam is for students to plan and operate the whole charity auction dinner for 311 people, from auctions to catering supply to planning and marketing.

Then let me list the names of most of the courses I have attended in FIU for two years:

1. Tourism destination marketing (I wrote a marketing plan with a budget of 5 million dollars for tourism promotion in Nicaragua);

2. Management accounting (made many reports for advanced courses of basic accounting courses);

3. Financial analysis (the discipline about some financial market products and derivatives);

4. Marketing strategy (the final project is to select an international enterprise to display its marketing strategy in a limited time);

5. Restaurant management (Professor used to be the regional manager of new york T.G.I.Friday, and the founder of the largest organic food sales website in China, and his wife initiated and operated the National Wine Competition);

6. Reception service industry law (analyzing some unexpected situations and industry-related litigation cases from the perspective of a lawyer, and the final project is to defend a case on behalf of the plaintiff and defendant);

7. Revenue management (analyzing the profit data, using the method completely opposite to controlling the cost to increase the profit space and manage these surpluses, and the final project is to use the data of STR, the world's top revenue management company, to analyze the profit space and business strategy of regional competitors);

8. bulk purchasing and menu engineering (focusing on the catering industry, the former mostly deals with suppliers, while the latter is how to effectively improve the profit margin and control costs by using psychology and marketing knowledge to show products to guests. Teaching methods are also innovative. Students spend time in class thinking about how employees, including suppliers, cheat and steal property from restaurants. Only by knowing how to steal can they know how to prevent it.

9. Hotel facilities management (the course basically belongs to engineering, but because it is a liberal arts major, it only requires a rough understanding of the engineering structure of a building, such as electricity, ventilation, shock absorption, etc., and a preliminary understanding of the principles, including elevator system and air conditioning system, as well as emergency escape and refuge, etc.);

11. International cooking (practice class ... was commented as "American New Oriental" in the circle of friends, and practiced the cooking of North Africa, Caribbean, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Middle East and Scandinavia in the kitchen, and held a dinner in groups. Our group organized a French dinner, which was decorated in the venue provided by the school, cooked and sold tickets);

11. luxury cruise management (the class is divided into groups, representing several major international luxury cruise companies, respectively, and they study in depth after class, and the final project is to show them on behalf of the company in a limited time);

12. On-site catering management (that is, as I mentioned above, the overbearing president is a professor's luxury wedding banquet and birthday banquet catering planning);

In addition, there are courses on red wine business, teaching courses on red wine and beer brewing, and wine tasting in class, but I haven't chosen it yet.

after these brief course introductions, the available facilities of the school can also be seen. In the college building of our college, it is necessary to provide a hardcover restaurant with a bar kitchen for students to hold dinner, as well as a baking room, a beer brewing teacher, a red wine classroom and a testing laboratory, a red wine storage room, a multimedia classroom with different functions and decoration styles, a computer room, a college carnival center with a billiard table (there are table football and X-BOX in the school lounge), a library and so on.

As for the school, there are health care departments that can make appointments for massage, as well as fitness rooms, restaurants, beaches, rocking chairs and so on. It is a small campus with a beautiful environment, which can basically be said to be designed for the Wine Management College.

There are also many internship channels in the school, such as luxury cruise companies, major international hotels, restaurant chains, Disneyland and so on. The professor in our class used the time to take us to visit the presidential suite and backstage facilities of the Intercontinental Hotel, as well as the Hard Rock Casino Hotel, LIV, the most profitable nightclub in America, and so on.

At school, I had the honor to know my professor's wife, and participated in the organizing committee of her 5th National Wine Competition as an assistant, helping to contact the participating wineries, get sponsorship, and plan and operate the dinner. In addition, SOBE, the largest beach feast in the United States, is held in South Miami Beach every February. As a full-time co-organizer, our school co-ordinates all the positions of student volunteers, and brings up more than 311 volunteer operation systems by itself, which promotes the success of the whole banquet in all aspects. I was lucky enough to get my scholarship in this activity.

in the first year, besides winning the prize in the school photo contest, I was also lucky enough to attend the internal celebration dinner of students and school leaders, and won the only High Achiever Award in every grade in the school. I feel very honored.

During the long vacation, I went to new york for the New Year, and spent the spring break in Mexico City, Guanajuato and Cancun. This year, I plan to take a car trip, spend Christmas in California and spend the Spring Festival in Cuba. Life can be interesting if you want.

One more thing, many people think that those who study abroad must be rich second generation, but in fact this is not the case. All the students around them are basically working hard somewhere. This is a realistic country. As long as you work hard, you will gain something. Work diligently and save money, and you are fully capable of paying for your own life and travel in the United States. It is simple.

That's about it this time. Maybe next time, I think of something interesting and share it with you. If you want to know more about me, or about the United States and studying in the United States, please pay attention to the upcoming "Studying in tales of mystery" in 2116. Best wishes.
