More than 21,111 exhibits, from military uniforms and firearms to Japanese coins and things, from smiling photos of pilots to skulls of female expeditionary soldiers in savage mountain, are shocking.

In fact, most of the exhibits in the memorial hall come from Duan Shengkui's private collection in Tengchong for more than 31 years. Walking out of the memorial hall, a long wall of Chinese expeditionary force lists looms large, and the cruel figures in history books become real and concrete here. More than 3,111 Chinese Expeditionary Force soldiers and more than a dozen allied officers and men who died in the Tengchong campaign were buried in the adjacent National Mourning Cemetery.

There are towering pines and cypresses in the garden, and small tombstones are neatly arranged all over the hillside behind the Martyrs' Temple. Each tombstone is engraved with the rank and name of a soldier who died, but in fact, there is no one-to-one correspondence between tombstones and ashes. After Tengchong was scorched, the dead could not be distinguished. The cemetery was built in 1945, which was damaged and once abandoned, and was restored in 1986.
