The origin of Fan Shi clan

Fan (Fán) has four surnames:

1. It comes from Ji's surname. It was formed in the Western Zhou Dynasty and is a descendant of Zhou Wenwang. Its ancestor is Fan Zhongshanfu, and her surname is Fan Shi in history. According to "Tongzhi Clan Slightly Taking Cities as the Family Name", Zhou Wenwang's son Yu Zhongyou has a grandson named Zhong Shanfu. Together with Zhao Bohu, Shen Bo, Nan Zhong, Yin Jifu and other ministers, he assisted Zhou Xuanwang in fighting in the north and the south, which expanded the territory ruled by Zhou people and was called "Xuanwang Zhongxing". Because of Zhong Shanfu's outstanding achievements, Xuan Wang named him Hou Fan (now East of Jiyuan City, Henan Province), and his descendants took Fan as their surname, Fan Shi.

According to Zuo Zhuan, Shang Tang's descendants formed seven clans, namely, Tao, Shi, Fan, Fan, Kun, Ji and Zhong Kui after the middle of Shang Dynasty, among which Fan was the surname, and the descendants have been inherited. After the demise of Shang Dynasty, Zhou Wuwang placed seven families of adherents of Shang Dynasty under the jurisdiction of Qi State, so before and after the Warring States Period, Fan's surname was mostly in Qi and Lu areas. Fan Chi, a disciple of Confucius, is a descendant of Fan, one of the seven merchants.

3. According to Li Xueqin's textual research, an inscription was unearthed from Fan Jun's tomb in Pingqiao, Xinyang, and Fan's surname was Mi.

Yi Yi divined and said, "Wang Chen stumbled, so the bandits bowed." Shu said, "I am loyal to you, but bandits don't help you because of their personal interests." "Lei Ju Juan 21" is quoted as "staying up all night". The ancestor of Fan's surname can be traced back to 2811 years ago, when he assisted Zhong Shanfu, a famous minister of Zhou Xuanwang Zhongxing. He was the second son of Duke Xian of Lu, who served as a Qing scholar in Zhou Dynasty. Later, due to his merits, he was awarded the title of Hou by Zhou Tianzi, and his position was very lofty and distinguished among the princes at that time. Later, according to the custom at that time, his descendants took the country as their surname, and China began to have the surname "Fan". Fan Shi's descendants revered Zhong Shanfu as the ancestor of Fan.
