As a result, the Peninsula and the two outlying islands, which used to be separated by the sea, have become one single entity. Macau is 11.9 kilometers from the north to the south and 7 kilometers from the east to the west, with a combined resident and non-resident population of about 450,000 people.

Unique Geography

Macao is located in the East Asian monsoon climate zone. In winter, the northeast monsoon from the northern continent is dry and cold; in summer, the southeast and southwest monsoon from the southern ocean are warm and humid. The control of different monsoon winds and their alternation form the natural seasonal variations.

Macao is blessed with abundant rainfall, with an average annual rainfall of about 2,030 millimeters, making it one of the rainiest regions along the coast of South China.

The peninsula of Macao is small, but the terrain is undulating and varied. Mount East Hope, Mount West Hope, Mount Persimmon, Mount Lianfeng, Mount Spurgeon, Mount Qingzhou and so on, each showing its own colors, are the famous scenic spots in Macao. Persimmon Hill was once set up as a fortress with solid stone walls, resembling an old European fortress, which was very impressive and was later restored as a tourist attraction. Climbing up and around the area, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the whole of Australia and the neighboring Zhuhai.

Marine Hill is also a scenic spot with a church and a bishop's house on its summit. When viewed from South West Bay, the church and other buildings stand on top of the peak, a magnificent sight; in the evening, the buildings stand with the light at their backs, their silhouettes embedded in the clouds, solemn and beautiful. The top of the hill has a quiet environment, and the view of the Southwest Bay from the railings, the buildings, the South China Sea, the blue sky, the shadow of the sails, the bridge across the sea, the scenery is beautiful.

Architecture of different styles

Macao's housing construction includes old Chinese-style mansions and Western-style buildings, ancient temples of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and European-style elegant churches, and nowadays many modern high-rise buildings have been added. The blend of eastern and western, traditional and modern architectural styles gives this harbor city a unique atmosphere.

The islands of Taipa and Coloane have been developing slowly in the past, but have become more lively in recent years. Taipa, in particular, is home to new buildings, the international airport, universities, hotels, a horse racing track, factories and residential buildings. On the other hand, Coloane is a quiet and tranquil place, with fields and villages scattered all over the area, giving it an idyllic and rural atmosphere. In recent years, walking trails have been established in the hills of Taipa and Coloane Island. Walking along the trails, one can not only exercise, get to know the flowers and trees, but also enjoy the scenery of Taipa and get in touch with nature. At the most scenic spots along the trail, there are rest parks, viewing points and lookouts. Observation decks. Standing at a higher point, the whole island of Macao and even the Hengqin Island of Zhuhai can be seen in full view.

Laid out like a garden city

Macao may be small, but it's a relatively tranquil place, like a garden city. The Peninsula is home to a number of gardens where residents can visit and relax. Among them, the White Dove's Nest Park occupies a large area surrounded by hills, green trees, flowers and grasses, and birds singing among them, adding to the natural and wild interest of the area; even in the height of summer, it is still a cool and green world. The Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park on the shore of the Pak Chung River on Green Island is the largest park in Macao. Sun Yat-sen was a revolutionary pioneer in China who practiced medicine and revolution in Macau. A bronze statue of Dr. Sun is erected at the entrance of the park. The park is characterized by pavilions, artificial lakes, curved bridges, swimming pools, a bird sanctuary, health trails and a children's playground. The park is the most beautiful and largest country park in the Peninsula. In addition, there are the Erlong Hose Park, Loosestrife Park, Nam Van Garden, Lourenco Park, Desert Garden and Wasco Dagmar Park, all of which have their own specialties.

There are as many as 40 to 50 temples in Macao, most of which are more than 100 years old, and some are even more than 500 years old, which can be regarded as the historical evidence of Macao's development. Their existence has embellished the landscape of Macao. Known as the "Three Great Zen Temples" of Macao, they are the Matsu Pavilion, the Po Chit Chan Temple and the Temple of Lianfeng. Among them, the Temple of Lianfeng is a representative building among the temples in Macao, which was built in 1592 and has a history of more than 400 years. In the modern history of China, the national hero Lin Zexu, who prohibited opium and came to Macao for parade on September 3, 1839, stayed in Lianfeng Temple, and the pavilion and several cases in which Lin Zexu did his business at that time are still preserved in the Temple. In 1989, a stone statue of Lin Zexu was erected in front of the temple; in 1997, the Lin Zexu Memorial Hall was built.
