In the second year of Yuanfeng of Song Dynasty, Su Dongpo was transferred to the post of governor of Huzhou. According to the usual practice, he should write a letter of thanks to Song Shenzong and say some flattering words such as gratitude and eternal loyalty to express his gratitude, but Mr. Dongpo did not. Not only did he not, but he was ignorant of the current affairs and said some words in his "Huzhou Xie Shangbiao": "Knowing that he is stupid and untimely, it is difficult to accompany the newcomer" and "Knowing that he is old and does not cause trouble, he may be able to adopt small people", which is taboo. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the New Deal. After this form of thanks was seen by his political opponents, He Zhengchen, the censor Li Xing, Li Ding, the censor Zhongcheng, and others, they immediately excerpted the sentences from the chapter and listed them together with some poems written by Mr. Dongpo that had the meaning of offending. He was impeached on the pretext of "harboring evil intentions and looking forward to resentment" and "foolishly joining the imperial court and being arrogant". The mediocre Shenzong of the Song Dynasty listened to the slander lightly and ignored the truth, so he muddleheadedly ordered Yushitai to remove Su Dongpo from his post and investigate Su Dongpo, and demoted him to Huangzhou to serve as a deputy envoy. This is the famous "Wutai Poetry Case" in history.
Huangzhou is located in the remote Dabie Mountains. It is a place where "there is no meat to eat, no medicine for diseases, no room to live in, and no friends to go out". It is sparsely populated, lacking in materials, and the living conditions are extremely difficult. During the days when he was demoted, Mr. Dongpo often worried about insufficient food rations for his family of eight. When one of his old friends, Ma Zhengqing, saw his predicament, he appealed to the local officials and asked them to hand over dozens of acres of abandoned campsites nearby for farming to meet Mr. Dongpo's urgent needs. After receiving the agreement, Mr. Dongpo bought a farming ox, wore a bamboo hat and a raincoat, rolled up his trouser legs, and lived a farming life of working from day to day and resting at sunset.
When a person is in adversity, it is a choice to be passive and decadent, let oneself go, and surrender. It is also a choice to have a high mind, enjoy hardships, and be determined to make progress. Mr. Dongpo was demoted to Huangzhou County for four years and two months. During this unbearable period, he regarded himself as a "Dongpo layman" and lived freely in the mountains and rivers, wearing a bamboo hat and coir raincoat. He not only cooked "Er Red Rice" was produced, and thirty-two delicacy recipes were left, such as "Dongpo Pork", "Dongpo Tofu" and "Dongpo Spring Pigeon Sauce". Here, he wrote more than 300 poems and songs, including "Niannujiao·Chibi Nostalgia" and "Chibi Ode" before and after, and created "Night Tour in Chengtian Temple", "Bie Wen Fu Zi Bian" and "Yi Zhuan" and hundreds of prose notes and academic treatises. Here, he examines his heart, summarizes his old self, explores the true meaning of life, and successfully completes the process of ideological transformation from reflection, maturity to detachment. Here, he cultivated his moral character, devoted himself to the study of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, and integrated them. He extracted the essence from them and injected them into his works, so that his works formed a unique artistic style that is bold, unrestrained, upright, exciting and vigorous.
