In the late 1970s, Qin Ling, who graduated from university, returned to his hometown-Xi 'an. Since then, he has been shooting Xi 'an continuously. No matter in the street, eating and living, he tried his best to photograph the scene in front of him and the dribs and drabs of Xi 'an.
At that time, the old street had not been rebuilt, and the cameras were all old-fashioned film cameras. Xi is still "Chang 'an", and people live a simple and happy life. Perhaps in other people's leisure time after dinner, perhaps on the way to and from work, perhaps in the dark morning, the life we are used to was quietly recorded by one person and became the youthful appearance of the city several years later.
In the 1990s, Xi began to carry out large-scale urban transformation, and the demolition almost reached a peak. During this period, Qinling took many photos about demolition, and many old buildings in the photos are now gone. Through this period of filming, he became more aware of the value of timely recording.
East-West Street, North-South Hutong, demolition site, urban village residents, Jiangsu and Zhejiang vendors, there are people in every photo of him, inside and outside, giving people a warm feeling. He wants to get close to people and take pictures of them.
One-way street for two people
No matter in life, work or photography, his wife Ye Zisheng has given Qinling great care and support. Qinling is mainly responsible for taking photos, and Ye Zisheng is responsible for writing and editing texts. This couple in the photography field really integrated photography into their lives.
An entertainment market on Jiefang Road in the early 1980s.
They wrote the book "Old Xi 'an-Entertainment Market in Disappearing Blocks". They made great efforts to take this set of photos. At that time, I was still working. Every afternoon after work, Qinling rides a bicycle with his wife, takes photos at the construction site together, chats with the workers, and feels the most authentic and simple living conditions of people on Jiefang Road. With sincere words and photos of old memories, warm-hearted release.
After filming for a long time, two people feel dissatisfied and will push it off and shoot again. They went to northern Shaanxi to photograph ancient villages, as many as seven times before and after. They have to know the landform, topography, water system, mountains and rivers, roads and people in the village in detail, including what the villagers eat, what tools they use and what the surrounding environment is like, before they can shoot what they want in detail. They have a lot of experience in taking photos: photos are "points" and videos are "faces", which enrich things and fully explain the context of things.
The southeast corner of the bell tower (now the location of Kaiyuan Mall) is where the once famous liberation market was 1985.
For decades, the two have been insisting on taking photos, writing and exercising, even after retirement. They cherish Chang 'an's past and witnessed the changes in Xi. They are not only photographers, but also walkers who record time.
