Since Ming and Qing Dynasties, Taoism has been divided into two sects, Quanzhen Sect and Zhengyi Sect. Both factions are disciples of Taoism and regard Taoism as their highest belief, but traditionally, the disciplines and practices of the two factions are quite different.
Quanzhen school pays attention to celibacy, full hair, living in a temple and being a vegetarian. They have lived in temples all their lives, and they are vegetarians. A vegetarian diet in Taoism is not a vegetarian diet in the secular understanding. In Taoist view, meat is fishy, and pungent spices such as mustard, onion, garlic and leek are not allowed to be eaten. Even some old practitioners have their own tableware and cookers, and they can't cook with cookers made of fishy meat.
