The body is slender and slightly flat. The head is conical and the snout is slightly blunt. The whole body is covered with scales, the scales are small and irregularly arranged, the back is grayish brown, the abdomen is yellow and white, the body is spotless, and the eggs are poisonous. This fish is less than 25 cm long, and all the silver fish are male. Those who are over 30 cm in length and dark yellow in color are all females. Changing sex according to body length is a characteristic of this fish, and it is also a rare phenomenon. Before the 1960s, it was the main economic fish in Yili, accounting for more than 50% of its output, and now it is on the verge of extinction.
It is distributed in Balkhash Lake and Ala Lake system, Yili River system, Yining, Huocheng, Tacheng, Emin and other areas, and mainly lives in rivers and lakes. The model origin of this species is Lake Ala.
