As a dish and traditional Chinese medicine, Ge Xianmi has a large number of historical materials as evidence: Tao Hongjing of Liang Dynasty wrote Bielu of Famous Doctors, followed by Compendium of Materia Medica, Examination of Medicinal Properties, Collection of Chinese Herbal Medicine, etc. The effects of Gexianmi are summarized as follows: improving eyesight, benefiting qi, giving birth to children, clearing away heat and reducing fire, benefiting stomach, treating phlegm fire, prolonging life after long-term use, eliminating fatigue, astringing and treating night blindness. Huang Tingjian, a Taoist priest in the valley of the Song Dynasty, wrote a poem "Ode to Green Vegetables", which is known as a delicacy. In the Ming Dynasty, arel was compiled into "Wild Vegetables" and later included in "Agricultural Administration". Zhao Xuemin recorded in the Compendium of Materia Medica in the Qing Dynasty: "Ge Xianmi was born on a stone in a cave in the western hills of Huguang, and his mouth burst in the rain. This kind of rice drifted with the tide and the natives fished it out. When I first ate it, it was like a small fresh fungus, purple and green, very sweet and fresh, smooth and crisp, suitable for making vegetables; ..... soak it in water and cook it with meat to make it taste like fungus. " Hefeng is rich in Gexianmi, which is one of the main producing areas in Huguang. After six years of Qianlong, the county annals called Hefeng Gexianmi: green and round, quite a good product. "Hefeng was originally a state" records: "Ge Xianmi was born more than a hundred miles away from Zhoucheng (Hefeng was originally a state) and was born in paddy fields outside Dayan Pass." The natives are the ancestors of Tujia nationality, and Dayanguan is now zouma town. At present, there are more than 15000 mu of paddy fields rich in Gexian rice, which are salvaged by local farmers every year. After being dried and stored, it can be eaten all year round.

Gexianmi is sweet, light and cold in nature, and has the effect of clearing away heat and improving eyesight. It can be used to treat pinkeye, night blindness and burn. According to the "test of medicinal properties": "(Ge Xianmi) disperses the mind to relieve fever, phlegm fire can be cured, and long-term service will prolong life." According to the National Collection of Chinese Herbal Medicine, Gexianmi is cold. Its taste is light, and it can clear away heat, astringe, invigorate qi, improve eyesight, and treat night blindness, rectocele, burns and scalds.
