Folk stunt "Beat the Iron Flower"
Text/Orchid Garden

On the twelfth night of the first month, in Chencang, Kansai Prefecture, an endangered folk skill, the "Tie Hua" performance, was staged, which opened the prelude to the prosperity of Xifu Lantern Festival. The blazing and gorgeous "iron flower" bloomed brilliantly in the night, presenting a magnificent scene of "the fire tree and silver flower never sleeps", which shocked thousands of viewers on the viewing platform.

"Iron Flower" is a traditional folk performance activity with a long history, which may appear after people mastered iron smelting technology in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, and has now been included in the intangible cultural heritage list. It is said that the earliest performance of "Tie Tie Hua" originated from the sacrificial activities of ancient craftsmen. Later, people took the meaning of "making a career with flowers" and "making a career with iron flowers" in festivals, hoping that life would flourish and all undertakings would flourish.

In the past, in some villages in Xifu, artisans who knew this skill would cook molten iron during the Spring Festival, and perform "striking iron flowers" for the villagers to add festive atmosphere. Later, with the gradual death of old artists, "Tiehua" has rarely been seen in recent years.

According to the old people who have seen "Tiehua", in the past, people had to prepare a special willow "Hua Gun" in advance, and carved a circular pit with a diameter of 3 cm at the top of the stick to hold iron juice. During the performance, iron juice with the temperature as high as 1500 degrees was injected into the flower stick. With Hua Gun with iron juice in one hand and Hua Gun without iron juice in the other, the performer quickly ran to the temporary "flower shed" more than a foot high and smashed it hard. One stick after another, the iron juice in the stick rushed into the "flower shed", and the willow branches at the top of the shed burst at once. In an instant, iron flowers splashed, meteors fell like waterfalls, firecrackers exploded, and the sound shook the sky. The dreamlike beauty shocked everyone at the scene. Of course, it is also dangerous to strike while the iron is hot. Performers should wear protective gear and glasses. , and master the skills of firing and hitting, so as to present the best effect. Through the continuous improvement of artists, the tools of "Tietiehua" are more novel, the performance forms are richer and the effects are more beautiful.

This "Iron Flower" performance attracted many people from urban and rural areas and surrounding counties and cities to watch. This activity specially invited the Wang Jia Tiehua Fire Dragon Steel Flower Performance Team in Kaifeng City, Henan Province, which has been passed down for five generations and has more than 100 years of experience in floral performance. At 7 o'clock that night, with the fireworks flying high in the sky, the performance of "Iron Flower" officially kicked off. The young man in charge of "Tiehua" is full of vigor and vitality. They cooperated with each other to hang the spool containing charcoal and pig iron on a rotatable device. With the acceleration of the rotation speed, the performance of "Tiehua" has also entered a climax, and cheers have been issued from time to time in the crowd.

Special effects such as Proud as Peacock, Silver Flower of Iron Tree and Scattered Flower of Goddess outline a beautiful picture of "People are dancing in the dragon and dragons are flying in the fire", and the shocking spectacle of flying iron flowers makes the audience jump for joy and revel in it.
