From the Westernization Movement led by Li Hongzhang and Zhang Zhidong, to the Reform Movement of 1898 led by Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, to the Revolution of 1911 led by Sun Yat-sen, and finally to the New Culture Movement.
The New Culture Movement completely emancipated the minds of the people in China, and through the New Culture Movement, people knew what new ideas were. At that time, intellectuals publicized "Mr. De" and "Mr. Sai" to let people know what democracy is and what science is. Because this is an unprecedented liberation of China Thought, the New Culture Movement is called Enlightenment.
Of course, every change will have a leader. During the New Culture Movement, a group of talented and educated intellectuals emerged, that is, the so-called "masters in troubled times".
The first of these masters is Chen Duxiu, who explained what science and democracy are for the first time in New Youth. This made people realize at that time, made them realize the shackles on their bodies at that time, and tried to break free. In addition, Chen Duxiu opposed writing classical Chinese and advocated vernacular Chinese, which was a great progress in the history of China.
Another leader is, of course, Mr. Lu Xun, whom we are very familiar with. Mr. Lu Xun gave up medicine and went into literature, which can be said to have devoted his later years to China's ideological emancipation movement.
He once said: People in China are like a dark room without lights. Everyone was asleep, only they were awake. They tried their best to wake others up, but they couldn't. This is the so-called "everyone is drunk and I wake up alone." And many of Mr. Lu Xun's articles can well reflect the current situation at that time, and can be said to be "pioneers."
