1, New Year's Day, New Year's Day.
On the first day of the first month, everyone should fill a red plate with oranges symbolizing "good luck" and put them on the big table in the hall, with green olives and various exquisite sweets on it. On this day, most families should be vegetarian, at least not eating meat for breakfast. After breakfast, the family visits each other to pay New Year greetings, adults give lucky money to children, host and guest exchange auspicious words and share congou.
The second day of the first month is "son-in-law's day", and married daughters will take their husbands and children back to their parents' homes for the New Year. When I get home, if I have a nephew at home, my aunt will have to pay again. Although I gave lucky money on the first day, this time it has a different meaning. This custom is called "eating midnight snack" by Chaoshan people. As the name implies, it's just lunch, and the daughter must get back to her husband's house before dinner.
2. On the seventh day, I like to eat "seven kinds of soups"
According to legend, the seventh day of the first month is the birthday of the ancestor Ren, also known as Ren Day. Every household in Chaoshan area has to make "seven soups" made of seven kinds of vegetables on this day. There is a saying in Chaoshan: "Adults become younger after eating seven kinds of soups, slaves (children) eat rosy cheeks, and Ziniang (little girl) eats them like flowers."
Seven kinds of vegetables also have their own meanings. According to the homonym of Chaoshan dialect, white radish means "head of vegetable", colorful head, leek means "everlasting", spring vegetable means "revival of everything", onion means "cleverness", celery means "diligence" and garlic means "everything". Moreover, I am used to eating big fish and meat during the Chinese New Year, so it is more appropriate to eat a healthy and nutritious "seven kinds of soup" on the seventh day of the first month.
