Ma Lao is a very strong man, but he failed to save his grandson in the end. He is the epitome of Xiangzi in the future. He is strong in character and body, but he can't protect his grandson and watch him die in his arms like that. After that, he sold the only asset in his life, and finally he could only make a living by buying things. Like Xiangzi, he couldn't get rid of the shackles of fate and finally died in a corner of the street.
The character Ma Lao mainly reveals the common fate that hardworking people can't meet their basic needs, and also reveals the dark society in which good people were not allowed a little way out in the old society, which became one of the most important factors for Xiangzi to change his attitude towards life. Camel Xiangzi tells the story of the ups and downs of rickshaw driver Xiangzi and his final downfall. It exposes the miserable life of the people at the bottom of semi-colonial and semi-feudal China society, and Xiangzi's experience reflects that it is more difficult for semi-colonial and semi-feudal working people to change their living standards through their own efforts and struggles than to ascend to heaven.
The novel depicts many low-level figures like Xiangzi. Some of those at the bottom have to live alone with others because of war and family separation, some are overwhelmed by their families, and some have to sell their bodies to support their brothers. The tragedy of the working people at the bottom of society is the tragedy of the whole society. Everyone in it can't escape like Xiangzi, unless they see their present situation clearly and unite to overthrow those systems and that terrible society.
