Its action nature and speed are similar to echinacoside, and central depressants such as pentobarbital sodium can weaken its cardiotonic effect. The extract of apocynum venetum root was used in the heart test of cats in vivo, and it also showed cardiac glycoside-like effect. The same plant (such as Canadian marijuana) is not as effective as digitalis for patients with atrial fibrillation. If used in a dose sufficient to control arrhythmia, it usually causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
