Liaoyang, known as Xiangping and Liaodong City in ancient times, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Liaoning Province, a modern industrial city with petrochemical industry as its main focus, the center city of south-central Liaozhong region, and a famous national historical and cultural city, as determined by the State Council. Liaoyang City is located in the transition zone between the Liaodong low hills and the Liaohe Plain, with a complete range of landforms, clear differentiation patterns, typical layered landforms, and regular geomorphic zoning. From the southeastern border of Baiyun Mountain to the northwestern boundary river (Hun River), the terrain from high to low, from the middle mountains, low mountains, high hills, low hills, tableland to plains, the level is clear.
Liaoyang City, before the Spring and Autumn Period, was inhabited by Chinese forefathers (mainly the Donghu tribe) and Yin and Shang immigrants. During the Xia and Shang dynasties, the present-day Liaoyang area was part of the Yingzhou region. In the 26th year of Qin Shihuang (221 BC), the country was divided into 36 counties, with Liaodong County's county seat located in Xiangping County, and on December 1, 1937, the city of Liaoyang County was merged with the "Manchurian Railway Dependency" to form Liaoyang City. on October 1, 1946, Liaoyang City was merged into Liaoyang County, with Liaoyang Old Town as its seat, and was subordinate to Liaoning Province. In May 1949, Liaoning Province was abolished, and Liaoyang City came under Liaodong Province.

Liaoyang City has a maximum horizontal distance of 92.2 kilometers and a maximum vertical distance of 100.3 kilometers, with a total length of 471.8 kilometers, and a total area of 4,731 square kilometers (7,091,900 mu). Among them, 3,011,800 mu of mountainous hills, accounting for 42.5% of the total area; 3,696,300 mu of plains, accounting for 51.1% of the total area; and 383,800 mu of water area, accounting for 5.4% of the total area.
Liaoyang City has 2.21 million mu of arable land, accounting for 31.2% of the total area, with a per capita share of 1.29 mu of arable land; 2,435,600 mu of forest land, accounting for 34.3% of the total area; 611,200 mu of grassland, accounting for 8.6% of the total area; and the remaining 25.9% of the city and the countryside, industry and mines, transportation, gardens, forests, and grasslands occupied by the remaining land.
The soil in Liaoyang is divided into 3 soil classes, 6 subclasses and more than 70 soil species. Among them, the brown loam soil category occupies the most land, amounting to 4,074,700 mu, accounting for 57.5% of the total land area; the meadow soil category is the second largest, amounting to 1,990,700 mu, accounting for 28.1% of the total land area; and the rice soil category occupies an area of 615,700 mu, accounting for 8.7% of the total land area.
Liaoyang city arable land till soil fertility belongs to the middle and upper class, of which the organic matter content of 1.87%, the total nitrogen 0.1%, effective phosphorus 7.1PPM, effective potassium 86.63PPM. Especially the Hun River, the Prince River alluvial plains, fertile soil, for agricultural production provides a unique natural conditions.
