Hanging calamus is a Chinese Dragon Boat Festival custom.

This custom existed in the Qing Dynasty. On this day, people hang calamus (or ai leaves tied together) in the portal, there will also be calamus and ai leaves leaning on or inserted in the door emperor. Folk use it to drive away evil spirits.

Hanging calamus, wormwood which has been the custom of the north and south of the city and countryside, can be in Jiangxi, Anhui, part of the Dragon Boat Festival on this day in front of the family hanging garlic, some hanging pomegranate flowers. Garlic odor pungent, pomegranate flowers bloom in May, is one of the "five ends of the day", in order to "drive away the ghosts in addition to bacteria.

Duanwu Festival, the occasion of China's southern region of the family to calamus, mugwort, pomegranate, garlic, dragon boat flowers, made of human form, known as the Ai people; will be hanging in the hall of the mugwort leaves, cut for the shape of the tiger, or cut for the tiger, paste the leaves, known as Ai Hu, women vie for wearing to ward off evil spirits and drive away miasma.

Su Dongpo, a great writer of the Song Dynasty, once said that calamus "wash away the soil, impregnated with water, placed in a basin for decades without withering.
