What is intestinal bean disease?
Silkworm bean disease is a disease caused by glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency, which is characterized by acute intravascular hemolysis after eating fresh broad beans. People with genetic defects in erythrocyte glucose -6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) will suffer from acute hemolytic anemia-silkworm bean disease after eating fresh broad bean or contacting with broad bean pollen. The pathogenic mechanism is not very clear. It is known that sensitive red blood cells with genetic defects can't provide enough NADPH to maintain the reducibility (antioxidant effect) of reduced glutathione (GSH) due to the defect of G6PD, and even induce the erythrocyte membrane to be oxidized and produce hemolytic reaction when encountering some factor of broad bean. G-6-PD can protect normal red blood cells from oxidative damage. Fresh broad bean is a strong oxidant. When G-6-PD is deficient, red blood cells will be destroyed and cause disease.
