The butterfly keyboard was controversial once it was introduced, because it was easy to dust or the fuselage was hot, so it was abandoned soon after it was introduced.

So what will happen to these problems? Different from the traditional scissors structure, the butterfly keyboard uses the butterfly structure. Apple gave it this name because the component at the bottom of the button is like the wings of a butterfly, and the hinge is in the center, rather than being stacked like a pair of scissors. Apple uses the butterfly structure to reduce the thickness of the keyboard. This structure will reduce the moving range of the keys, so it will require less space. Butterfly keyboard can provide satisfactory key stroke and stability, but unfortunately, it is easy to get into debris, dust or other particles in the key structure, which leads to the failure of keys to work normally. The maintenance of butterfly keyboard is also very troublesome, and it is necessary to replace the whole side of the keyboard, including Touch Bar, Touch ID, battery, touchpad and keyboard. If it is an out-of-warranty repair, the cost will be very high.

So which models now use butterfly keyboards? All MacBook models may encounter failures caused by butterfly keyboards, because since the release of MacBook in 20 15, the series has been equipped with butterfly keyboards as standard. Although Apple subsequently made some slight improvements to the butterfly structure design, all 20 16, 20 17, 20 18 15-inch MacBook Pro may still fail. However, in 20 18, after a collective complaint from American users, Apple apologized and introduced a free maintenance policy. In June, Apple announced that it had confirmed that in some MacBook and MacBook Pro models from 20 15 to 20 17, the keyboard would break down. After only six months, the product line was completely replaced and the butterfly keyboard was finally replaced.

After five years of love-hate disputes over butterfly keyboards, within six months, Apple switched its entire notebook computer product line to a Magic Keyboard based on scissors feet. Compared with the improvement in the past few years, the efficiency is amazing. Now the butterflies of MacBook Pro 13 inch, 16 inch and Macbook Air have flown away.
