Born in 1970 in Wanfa Village, Bin County, Harbin, Yang Guofu is a native Harbinite who learned to make a living at an early age because his family was not well off. He dropped out of school at the age of 15 and attended junior high school for only half a year. in September 2003, in his thirties, Yang Guofu, together with his wife, Zhu Dongbo, set up the first directly-managed store called "Yangji Spicy Hot Pot" in Red Copper on Yonghe Street in Harbin.
