According to records, the predecessor of Roast Meat Restaurant was a "roast meat stall" on the banks of the Yinzhuo Bridge in Shichahai, owned by the famous Ji De Cai, a native of Tongzhou (i.e., Tong County) in Beijing. Its original name was "Luquanju", and because the owner's surname was Ji, he operated a barbecue mutton stall, which was commonly known as "Ji's Barbecue Meat Stall". Ji's barbecue meat was unique in technique and flavor, which was praised by all customers. After the death of the owner Ji De Cai, his son Ji Zongbin succeeded the business, and then by his grandson Ji Zengyuan took over. 1927 Ji Zengyuan died of illness, and his 21-year-old brother Ji Gechen was in charge of the business.
