Perennial herb with thick rhizomes. Leaves all basal, fleshy; leaf blade ovate or narrowly ovate, 3.5-17 centimeters long, 2-9.5 centimeters wide, apical tip subacute or obtuse, base attenuate or broadly cuneate, margin entire, both surfaces appressed pubescent, sometimes sparsely so on upper side, lateral veins ca. 4 pairs; petiole compressed, 1-8 centimeters long, up to 1 centimeter wide, densely pubescent. Cymes 2-stoned, unbranched or one-branched, with (1-)2-13(-17) flowers per inflorescence; peduncle 6-30 cm long, pubescent; bracts 2, opposite, ovate, broadly ovate, or circularly ovate, 1-4.5 cm long, 0.8-2.8 cm wide, densely pubescent; pedicel up to 2.3 cm long, densely pubescent and shortly glandular hairy. Calyx 0.9-1 cm, 5-lobed to base, lobes narrowly lanceolate, 2-2.5 mm wide, outside pubescent and glandular hairy, inside sparsely pilose. Corolla purple or lavender, sometimes white, throat yellow, 3-4.5 cm long, sparsely pubescent on both surfaces, with 2 longitudinal stripes of hairs opposite the 2 lobes of the upper lip; tube 2-3 cm long, mouth 1-1.4 cm in diameter; upper lip 5-9 mm long, 2-lobed, lower lip 1.2-1.8 cm long, 3-lobed. Filaments of stamens inserted 1.2-1.6 cm from base of corolla, 9-10 mm long, broad, sparsely pilose proximally, narrowing upward and curving geniculately, anthers ca. 5 mm long; staminodes 2, inserted 1.1-1.5 mm from base, 4-6 mm long, sparsely pilose. Disk oblique, ca. 2 mm high, margin undulate-toothed. Pistil 2.2-3 cm long, ovary and proximal part of style densely pubescent, stigma bifid. Capsule 4-6 cm, ca. 2 mm thick, pubescent. Flowering period April-July.
