Flowers about 5 cm long; sepals lanceolate, 1-1.5 cm long, purple inside, outside densely slightly curved stiff spines; petals rectangular-orbicular lanceolate or lanceolate, 1.5-2 cm long, purplish-red, arranged in several whorls, tapering inward into stamens; no style, stigma red, into a concave stigma disk. Berry globose, 3-5 cm in diam., purplish red, outside densely covered with stiff spines; seeds globose, more than 10 mm in diam. Flowering in July-August, fruiting in August-September.
