The "disease elimination response" in traditional Chinese medicine is also called the positive response.

What does disease elimination reaction refer to? In traditional Chinese medicine treatment, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage, qigong and other treatment methods stimulate the body's defense and self-repair functions to eliminate disease pathogens. We know that during the process of TCM treatment, our bodies will react more or less, but some reactions are adverse reactions caused by drugs, and some reactions are reactions of our body to expel diseases. We call the body to expel diseases. The evil reaction is the disease elimination reaction. The disease elimination response is a benign adjustment response of our body and is beneficial to our body.

Although the disease elimination reaction widely exists in our clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, although it is not mentioned in the formal textbooks of traditional Chinese medicine, there are rich records in the traditional Chinese medicine literature of the past dynasties, such as the famous medical records of the Eastern Han Dynasty Zhang Zhongjing's "Treatise on Febrile Diseases" mentioned many normal body reactions after taking relevant Chinese medicines. Zheng Qin'an, a Vulcan sect physician in the Qing Dynasty, also talked about some normal body reactions after many people took Yang-warming drugs in his works. The details are as follows:

1. The way the body expels disease, that is, the way our body expels disease from the body after treatment. Because evil spirits enter the human body in different parts and have different properties, the diseases they cause are also different. Moreover, different human bodies have different constitutions. Therefore, there are various ways to expel evil spirits or disease qi. They can generally be excreted from the body through the following ways:

First are the ends of the limbs. The ends of the limbs are the feet and palms. Our hands and feet are the extreme ends of the body’s limbs, and they are also the places where evil spirits can be easily eliminated. Generally speaking, the origin of evil energy is also the outlet of evil energy, so most of the evil energy invades from the surface of the body to the trunk and to the internal organs. The invasion of our disease evil into the body is a centripetal invasion, while the elimination of evil energy is centrifugal, starting from our body. The trunk, from the internal organs, is expelled from the body to the limbs. According to clinical observations, disease qi that invades the human body is expelled from the body through the ends of the limbs through cold wind, air conditioning, cold sweat, sticky sweat, etc.

The second aspect is through the skin. After the human body's yang energy is activated, the body activates its self-regulatory mechanism, and various evil spirits can be discharged from the body through the skin. Different pathogenic factors are discharged from the body in different forms. For example, when we discharge cold air through the skin, we usually sweat cold sweat, and when we discharge moisture, we will sweat sticky, sticky, and even sticky sweat. People sweat like glue or butter, which is dark in color and smelly. When we sweat, we should wipe it dry with a dry towel in time to avoid being exposed to wind. If we don't wipe it dry, we can easily feel the external evil again. And don't rinse it with cold water at this time, because our body's body structure is very sensitive after sweating. If it is loose and washed with cold water, you will feel the coldness, which will also lead to the obstruction of the interstitium and the evil spirit cannot be driven away.

In addition, if we eliminate evil spirits through perspiration in traditional Chinese medicine treatment, we are required not to sweat profusely during treatment, because sweating profusely can easily cause the patient to collapse. Generally, the patient is slightly Sweating, light to moderate sweating, I think is fine. But if profuse sweating occurs, resulting in the loss of electrolytes and water, we can promptly infuse the patient with some fluids and some electrolytes, which can also achieve a remedial effect, or let the patient drink some sugar salt water or some porridge. Ah, they can all play a relatively good role. Therefore, an important way to expel evil qi through the skin is through perspiration, thereby achieving the effect of eliminating disease qi. This method is also a very common treatment method in our traditional Chinese medicine. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is called sweating method. There is a saying in the Nei Jing that "what is on the surface is caused by sweating."

So if we feel a lot of cold air, we can use this method of perspiration to expel the evil air from the body. When expelling diseases through the skin, some patients will develop rashes, which is also a sign of toxins in the body being discharged from the body. For some patients with allergic constitutions, rashes are more common. Some people develop pimples, while others develop herpes. Generally speaking, people who have papules are a manifestation of wind-heat and heat poison being excreted from the body. Some people have herpes, and yellow water will flow after scratching it. This kind of rash is a reaction of the moisture or damp heat in our body being expelled from the body. When pathogenic factors are discharged through the skin, in addition to rashes, some may develop spots. This is also a reaction to the discharge of heat toxins from our bodies after treatment with traditional Chinese medicine.

In addition, some literature also records that the meridians for expelling evil can be calculated based on the location of the rash. For example, the rash on the Yongquan point on the sole of the foot is the toxic gas discharged from the Shaoyin meridian. If it is a rash on the back of the foot, it is the site where the poisonous evil gas is discharged from the Yangming meridian. The same is true for other parts. In addition, some patients will say that the room smells very bad after getting up, which we usually call illness qi. If someone is sick, you will feel a strange smell in their room. This is generally considered to be the body's sufficient yang energy, and the disease pathogens are discharged through the skin during sleep, so it manifests as a bad smell. , open the windows, the ventilation will be better. For example, one of my patients told me that when there was a lot of moisture in his body, the odor emitted by his body was particularly strong and smelly. Through TCM treatment, after the dampness and heat in his body are eliminated, his body odor will be significantly improved or even disappear. Some literature also records that there is a molting reaction when eliminating diseases through the skin. The molting reaction is like a snake shedding its shell, although this is rarely seen clinically.

The third aspect is urine.

Some patients with drinking syndrome in traditional Chinese medicine have edema, and some have body fluid retention, such as pleural effusion and peritoneal effusion. After treatment with traditional Chinese medicine, the water in the patient's body will be excreted through the urine, among which the excreted through urine is The most important way. For example, some of our patients have edema in their limbs. After taking medicine, they will find that they urinate a lot. This is a sign that the water in the body is expelled from the body through traditional Chinese medicine treatment. Generally speaking, as the amount of urine increases and the water in the body is eliminated, the edema will slowly subside. In addition, heat evil can also be excreted through urine. For example, when we treat some patients with heat syndrome or heat toxin syndrome in the body, after taking medicine, the patient will find that the color of the urine is very yellow, and there is a leak in the urethra when urinating. There is a tingling sensation, and sometimes there is a burning sensation. This is a reaction of the heat toxins in the body being excreted through urine. Generally speaking, as the color of urine becomes lighter, the stinging and burning sensation of urination is reduced, and the heat evil in the body is better eliminated. Of course, in this case, we encourage patients to drink more boiled water to help eliminate this evil spirit.

The fourth aspect is the digestive tract. The elimination of digestive tract diseases is mainly through the gastrointestinal tract, because the gastrointestinal tract is a passage for most diseases to be excreted from the body. Most of the waste and toxins in the body are excreted from the large intestine and excreted through the stool. The main symptom of passing the disease through stool is diarrhea. Some patients can have diarrhea 5-10 times a day after taking traditional Chinese medicine, and the color of their stool is very black, or extremely smelly, like water. Although the diarrhea is severe, if it is a disease elimination reaction of traditional Chinese medicine, After diarrhea, you will not feel tired, but will feel very relaxed, because the evil spirits in your body are expelled through stool. Many patients with Yang deficiency syndrome have been seen clinically. First, let’s explain what Yang deficiency is. Chinese medicine emphasizes the balance of Yin and Yang. Yang is like the sun in our body. If some people’s body’s “sun” energy is insufficient, Yang deficiency will appear. For example, especially in winter. He is afraid of the cold. In the summer, it is okay for others to stay in an air-conditioned room. But as soon as he enters an air-conditioned room, he immediately feels unbearable and is particularly sensitive to the cold.

In terms of food, patients with yang deficiency are also particularly sensitive to cold foods and foods with a cold nature. For example, in summer, everyone eats mung bean ice and cold beer, which is fine. However, patients with yang deficiency syndrome will feel uncomfortable in the stomach as soon as they eat it. Sometimes they will tell the doctor that if a cool breeze blows, they will feel uncomfortable around the stomach and navel, so they need to use Cover your hands. Clinically, we give patients with yang deficiency syndrome a treatment method of warming yang, such as Sini Decoction, which contains aconite, dried ginger, and licorice. Everyone knows that aconite is very yang-warming, but many patients with yang deficiency syndrome will also experience diarrhea after taking Sini Decoction. This kind of diarrhea is a reaction to the discharge of evil energy, so don’t panic in this case. The color of the stool is relatively dark at the beginning of this kind of diarrhea, then the color gradually becomes lighter, and finally turns into yellow stool and is relatively formed. I once encountered such a patient with perianal eczema in clinical practice. The disease had lasted for several years, and many treatments had failed. Later, he came to see me.

Generally, eczema is of damp-heat syndrome. I saw his perianal eczema at that time, and it was very pale in color. This is different from the damp-heat type of eczema we usually see. The color looks redder and the discharge is thicker. In addition, I saw that his tongue was very pale and tender, with thin white coating and less tongue coating, and the tongue surface was moist. This was also an obvious sign of yang deficiency, so I prescribed Aconite Lizhong Decoction for him at that time. Because I think his syndrome is spleen and kidney yang deficiency, which cannot warm water. This patient had severe diarrhea for the past two days after taking the medicine. At that time, I thought it was strange. Generally speaking, Fuzi Lizhong Decoction is often used to treat diarrhea due to spleen-yang deficiency, but this patient had severe diarrhea after taking the medicine. sharp. Later, I went to read a book and found out that Zhang Zhongjing mentioned in the "Taiyin Disease Chapter" of "Treatise on Febrile Diseases" that patients with spleen-yang deficiency syndrome sometimes experience diarrhea when the disease improves. This kind of diarrhea is the body's response to the deficiency and cold. The manifestation of evil being expelled from the body. Therefore, clinically, some patients with yang deficiency syndrome will have diarrhea after taking yang-warming drugs. This kind of diarrhea is often the body's response to expel pathogenic factors.

In addition, some patients will experience gas movement in their abdomen after taking medicine. They feel as if there is gas running around in their stomach, or they feel distended and painful. Some patients also fart more. , some patients also have severe hiccups. These phenomena remind us that after the body's yang energy is restored, the qi movement of the organs is benignly regulated, and the body begins to dredge the qi movement and expel unhealthy qi. This is a good thing. Clinically, when we encounter patients with liver qi stagnation, we usually give them some drugs that soothe the liver and promote qi. The patient will often experience gas flowing in the abdomen. We think this is because the qi mechanism of the human body has been dredged and the human body is The benign adjustment effect resulted in better gastrointestinal function and better sleep. If the evil is in the upper burner, which refers to our chest, including the heart and lungs, the evil in the upper burner can be expelled from the body through vomiting. For example, patients with lung cancer will frequently vomit after taking traditional Chinese medicine, and What was vomited was sticky phlegm, which suggested that the patient's righteousness was restored after treatment with traditional Chinese medicine, and the evil spirits in the upper burner were expelled from the body in the form of vomiting. This method is also an important method to expel evil spirits in our traditional Chinese medicine treatment. Zhang Congzheng, a famous medical scientist in the Jin and Yuan Dynasties, made good use of the three methods of "sweating, vomiting, and lowering" to attack evil spirits, and vomiting was one of them.

The fifth aspect is the respiratory tract.

Generally speaking, the cold air in the Taiyang Meridian can pass through the respiratory tract and eliminate evil spirits through sneezing, runny nose, coughing, etc. Clinically, we often see patients with dry cough or excessive phlegm that persists day and night; or they may suddenly be afraid of cold or wind, have a lot of runny nose, stuffy nose, and sneeze, which is very similar to a cold. This is the reaction of the righteous energy of the solar meridian attacking evil. Speaking of this, I remember that in 2006, I went to Malaysia to give lectures and chat with my Malaysian classmates. A classmate talked to me about a very interesting phenomenon. He said that he used Xiao Qinglong Decoction when treating some exogenous coughs. Founded by this classmate, a very strange phenomenon occurred when he used Xiaoqinglong Decoction to treat cough caused by exogenous wind and cold. Originally, this prescription was used to relieve the patient's cough, but the patient's cough became more severe after taking it, but this kind of cough The worsening phenomenon will not last long, and the patient's condition will usually be significantly relieved after one or two days, so he finds it very interesting. Now that I think about it, the patient's cough is also a manifestation of the body expelling evil qi from the body through the respiratory tract. The temporary aggravation of the cough is a reaction to the fierce struggle between righteous qi and evil qi in the body after taking the medicine. Through clinical observation, wind and cold evil spirits are expelled from some acupuncture points on the meridians and from the ends of the limbs through coughing, sneezing, etc. Some patients are expelled from the respiratory qi. For example, for common bronchial asthma, patients are taking medicine. There will be unexplained colds, sneezing, and extremely cold breathing. We think this is the expelling reaction of the respiratory tract.

The sixth aspect is the meridian muscle table. Generally, when a disease elimination reaction occurs, the meridians will produce shifting pain. What is shifting pain? That is, the pain will move along with the circulation of the meridians. For example, the Taiyin Lung Meridian of the Hand starts with pain in the elbow. After treatment, the pain will gradually shift. When the disease Qi moves, the parts where the disease Qi passes are often accompanied by pain, soreness, swelling, and numbness. , itching and other sensations. Some patients will experience severe pain, abdominal pain, or even unbearable pain in the muscles and joints all over their body when they are getting rid of illness. This is a reaction of the Yang Qi in the body running through the meridians to expel the latent Yin evil. At this time, the Yang Qi is repairing lesions to fully restore the health of the body. If the body has a feeling of warmth, it is a natural reaction that the qi and blood in the meridians are flowing smoothly and vigorously. For example, in clinical practice, we treat some Bi syndromes. Bi syndromes are what we often call rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, which are common joint soreness and pain. Sometimes when we treat Bi syndromes, patients will report that eating Not only is the pain not relieved but aggravated after taking medicine, this is actually a reaction of our body's yang energy to expel the evil of yin and cold. So I often explain to patients that this is our body’s way of getting rid of evil spirits, so don’t panic. This phenomenon of worsening joint pain may be a reaction before the meridians are opened. Traditional Chinese medicine teaches that "if there is blockage, there will be pain; if there is blockage, there will be no pain." When Chinese medicine stimulates the body's yang energy to dredge the meridians, the pain may intensify in the moment before the meridians are dredged, but once the meridians are dredged, the pain will be greatly relieved.

In addition, there are severe patients with muscle atrophy who will repeatedly experience muscle pain throughout the body during TCM treatment. Sometimes the pain is excruciating and accompanied by vomiting, thirst, and fever. These are all manifestations of strong yang energy in the body, expelling evil energy through the meridians and muscle surfaces. Clinically, patients often present with muscle pain for several days or even one to two months, and then find that the painful muscles no longer atrophy or sag. This reaction of repairing the meridians can be said to be thrilling and requires great concentration from the doctor. and patients' strong confidence.

The seventh is the orifice. Our human body has five sense organs and various orifices. These orifices are also a way for evil spirits to easily invade, but they are also a way for evil spirits to be easily discharged. The orifices of our body, such as eyes, nose, ears, mouth, vulva, anus, and urethra. What are the reactions of expelling evil energy through the orifices, such as toothache, pain in the ears, pus in the ears, blistering on the tip of the tongue, dry and sore throat, or finding a lot of eye feces or diarrhea when you wake up in the morning, so through various parts of the body The orifices can also expel evil spirits. Let me give you an example. When I was working in Sichuan, I treated a child who had chronic otitis media. He was originally treated with antibiotics, but the effect was not very good. When I treated him, I prescribed Chinese medicine for him. After a week of treatment, there was no big reaction. When the treatment reached the second week, a lot of very dirty and viscous liquid came out of his ears. There were blood clots in the ear, so his parents felt strange why messy things came out of his ears after taking the medicine. They were so frightened that they came to find me. I told his parents that this might be a reaction to the discharge of toxins from the ears after taking traditional Chinese medicine. Sure enough, after the child's ears discharged a lot of dirty mucus, his otitis media was significantly relieved.

This case left a deep impression on me. Some patients originally had no abnormal taste in their mouths, but after taking Chinese medicine, they felt bitter and bad breath. However, with treatment, these symptoms slowly disappeared, and the heat toxins in their bodies were significantly relieved. Bitter bad breath is a reaction to the heat and poison in the body being expelled from the body through the mouth. In addition, as we mentioned before, the diarrhea that occurs after taking Yang-warming medicine is also a reaction of the evil energy in the body being discharged from the body through the orifice of the anus. Here I would also like to focus on talking to you about the reaction of women in expelling evil spirits from the body through the vagina and menstruation.

I once had a female patient in Xiamen who came to see me for eczema. This patient had severe dampness and heat, and severe blood stasis. Her menstrual period was very dark, with a lot of blood clots, and she often had dysmenorrhea. Judging from the tongue, the color was Purple. When I was treating her eczema, I also gave her medicine to promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis to treat blood stasis syndrome. During the treatment, she told me that a large blood clot fell out during one of her menstrual periods. Shocked. I comforted her and said, don't be afraid. This is a manifestation of the body expelling blood stasis from the body through menstruation after TCM treatment. Generally speaking, the discharge of blood stasis has a good therapeutic effect on qi and blood stagnation in the body.

In clinical practice, when I help many women with diseases such as irregular menstruation, if there is qi stagnation and blood stasis, which means that qi and blood are not flowing, I will ask the patient to take Chinese medicine until the third day of menstruation. For three days, the purpose of this is to allow Chinese medicine to mobilize the body's regulatory response and expel blood stasis from the body through menstruation. There is also a female patient who came to see melasma on her face. There are two things worth paying attention to. One is that Qi and blood are not flowing and she has symptoms of dysmenorrhea. The second is that the stool is not smooth. So when I was treating her, I focused on these two aspects. The first was to clear the stool, and the second was to clear the stool. To clear the qi and blood, I also specifically asked her to take the medicine until the third day of menstruation. During her recent follow-up visit, she told me that she had passed out a lot of blood clots during her latest menstrual period, and the discharge seemed to be very dirty things. Her stools were also much smoother, and the chloasma on her face had also improved significantly. Therefore, menstruation is a good way to remove blood congestion from the body.

The body also has other ways to expel evil spirits, such as the six meridians’ expulsion reaction, the protruding parts of the human body’s protruding parts’ expulsion reaction, and the so-called emotional reactions and verbal reactions.

The reaction time for eliminating diseases varies from person to person. If the disease is in the meridians, the time to eliminate the disease will be shorter. If the disease is in the six internal organs, the time to eliminate the disease will be longer. If the disease is in the five internal organs, It takes the longest time to get rid of the disease. Because according to our traditional Chinese medicine, the meridians are relatively superficial, followed by the six internal organs, and the five internal organs are at the innermost level. In addition, the disease elimination reaction is also related to the patient's constitution. Generally speaking, people with a Yang-prosperity constitution are most likely to eliminate evil spirits. Those with a strong body have stronger resistance and better self-repair ability. A constitution with yang deficiency is the most difficult to expel evil, because its ability to resist external evil and self-repair is relatively weak. Therefore, those with Yang deficiency should be treated with traditional Chinese medicine to warm and replenish Yang Qi, thereby helping them expel evil spirits from the body.

In addition, the dosage of TCM prescriptions will also affect the time it takes to eliminate the disease. Generally, when the patient is not weak, the dosage of the prescription is larger, and the disease will be eliminated faster.

2. The way the body eliminates evil spirits The nature of evil spirits determines the way it is excreted.

There are different evil spirits such as wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, and fire in nature, and different evil spirits will also be produced inside our human body, such as phlegm, water drinking, blood stasis, etc. Different evil spirits The reactions to eliminating evil spirits are different. Generally, the symptoms of wind evil include sneezing, runny nose, fever, body aches, itching, numbness, and swelling. In the case of cold evil, patients with severe internal cold evil, such as flaccidity and numbness in the limbs, may develop a general fear of cold after taking the medicine, and may feel that their illness is aggravated, feel cold air coming out, and break out in cold sweats. Damp evil generally stagnates in the meridians of the body and the upper, middle and lower burners, manifesting as heaviness of the limbs and even edema. Therefore, when the damp evil is discharged, the damp evil moves to the hands and feet. In addition to soreness, numbness, pain, swelling and itching in the hands and feet, Blisters, eczema, and even skin peeling may also occur. Some patients have sticky sweat all over their body. These are the reactions of dampness evil being expelled from the body.

Let me tell you a medical case. Because the climate in Xiamen is very hot and humid, skin diseases such as eczema are very common. I see more of these patients. When an old man came to see a doctor, he had been suffering from eczema for three years. I prescribed him some medicine. Later, he took it for a week and felt good. When he came for follow-up consultation, I prescribed him medicine for about ten days. After that, I went to Malaysia to give lectures. After I came back, he told me that on the tenth day of treatment, I had a lot of rashes all over my body, and when I scratched them, water would ooze out, and it was very itchy. I couldn't be contacted at the time, so I couldn't be consulted. However, despite these conditions, he did not stop taking the medicine and kept taking it. After a day or two, the rash gradually faded and his illness was more than half cured. Fire evil is mainly excreted from the body through rash, itching, swelling and pain, fever, red urine, anal burning, diarrhea, etc. For some patients with colds and fevers, one of my favorite prescriptions is Shengjiang Powder. Usually after taking this medicine, the condition will be significantly relieved and the fever will subside after a few bouts of diarrhea. This is mainly to expel the fiery evils from the body through diarrhea. The terminology of our traditional Chinese medicine is to draw out the fire from the bottom of the cauldron. So usually after prescribing this medicine, I will tell the patient that taking this medicine may cause diarrhea. Don’t be afraid of being nervous. Usually, after a few diarrhea, The first stomach fever will subside immediately.

Another one is the phlegm evil. The phlegm-dampness evil is mainly excreted from the body through a large amount of phlegm, frequent urination without obvious inducement, diarrhea, and heavy perspiration. The way blood stasis is excreted from the body is subcutaneous ecchymosis, blood in the stool, coughing up blood, and menstruation. If the blood stasis is blocked in the meridians, the patient will have waist pain that feels like it is breaking, or the body surface will be sore, hot, numb, swollen, itchy like insects crawling, or the wrist will beat involuntarily or twitch. This is an inevitable reflection of the vigorous movement of vitality and the opening up of stagnant meridians. Finally, there is dryness evil, which is excreted from the body through reactions such as red tongue and face, black and smelly stools, etc. I have not seen many of them in clinical practice.

The nature of evil Qi will also affect the duration of the disease elimination reaction. Generally speaking, wind-type mild pathogens are easily excreted from the body, while wet and sticky pathogens are discharged the slowest. Cold evils are hidden in the muscles, while damp-type evils are slower than phlegm evils. The slowest. This is what we mean by the different ways in which different evil qualities are discharged from the body.

3. The relationship between disease elimination reactions and adverse drug reactions (including allergic reactions).

Adverse drug reactions, known as ADRS in English, refer to unexpected harmful reactions that occur due to drug interactions under commonly used dosage conditions and have nothing to do with prevention and treatment purposes. Adverse drug reactions include side effects, toxic reactions, allergic reactions, and secondary reactions. Adverse drug reactions can be divided into two types: type A and type B. Type A adverse reactions are caused by the enhanced pharmacological effect of the drug. Its characteristics are predictable and dose-related, with a relatively high incidence rate and a relatively low mortality rate. Type A adverse reactions are usually noted on the drug label. Type B drug effects are abnormal reactions unrelated to normal pharmacological effects. It is generally difficult to predict and cannot be detected by routine toxicological screening. The incidence rate is very low. Once it occurs, the mortality rate is high, so we must pay close attention to the adverse reactions of this kind of drug. Many netizens or people think that our traditional Chinese medicine treatment is very safe and has no side effects. In fact, some adverse reactions may occur during treatment with traditional Chinese medicine. For example, there are aconitine poisoning caused by Aconite, Aconite, and Aconite; there are also allergic reactions such as skin itching caused by insect drugs such as centipedes and leeches; and skin itching caused by Qingfengteng; Kidney damage caused by dichochoic acid, heavy metal poisoning caused by cinnabar, lead, etc., and poisoning reactions caused by cantharidin, nux vomica, arsenic, etc., so traditional Chinese medicine can also cause adverse drug reactions. In addition to improper use of toxic drugs in terms of indications, dosages and treatment courses, the main reason for adverse reactions of traditional Chinese medicines is the inability to use drugs based on syndrome differentiation. Because our Chinese medicine attaches great importance to syndrome differentiation and treatment. For example, now that everyone's economic level has improved significantly, they will buy some supplements, but some people are suitable for supplements, and some people are not suitable for supplements, so when we take supplements, we must also take supplements based on syndrome differentiation. If we do not differentiate, for example, we cannot take supplements. Yes, if you give Korean ginseng to a person with a strong yang energy, he will have adverse drug reactions.

There is a difference between the body's disease elimination response and the adverse reactions of drugs, but sometimes it is difficult to completely separate them. The following points help distinguish the two:

First of all, the disease elimination reaction is a benign adjustment reaction of the body. No matter how strong the reaction is, the patient still feels very comfortable most of the time. The patient's mental and physical in good condition. For example, during the treatment process, the patient suffered from severe diarrhea, but after the diarrhea, the patient felt comfortable and had a great appetite. Another example is when the joints are exposed to cold wind. As the disease elimination response becomes more and more comfortable, the joints will also become warmer. One of my female patients had severe blood stasis in her body. After taking Chinese medicine, her menstrual blood was very dark in color and it took about 20 days to stop. However, she did not feel any discomfort when the blood clots were removed. Instead, she felt that her body was It's very refreshing, this is a typical illness elimination reaction. Adverse drug reactions will more or less cause harm to the body or even cause death. Therefore, when adverse drug reactions occur, patients will feel very uncomfortable and suffer from many mental or physical discomforts. For example, diarrhea, which is an adverse drug reaction, will occur during diarrhea. Later, patients will experience fatigue, listlessness, loss of appetite, etc.

Secondly, the disease elimination reaction usually stops after the body expels the evil spirits, even during the medication period, while the adverse drug reactions will continue and will not end as long as the medication is not interrupted. For example, the eczema disease elimination reaction mentioned earlier will cause a lot of rashes during the treatment. If it is a disease elimination reaction, the eczema on the body will be significantly improved after three or four days. But if it is an allergic reaction to a drug, as long as you do not stop taking the drug, the rash will not go away or may even get worse. This is one way to identify the two. To clearly distinguish between the two we need to accumulate more experience.

In the clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, since it is sometimes difficult to distinguish clearly between disease elimination reactions and adverse drug reactions, we must pay attention to: First, if the patient has a reaction during treatment, we must closely observe and monitor it to see if it is Adverse drug reactions or sickness reactions. Because sometimes adverse drug reactions and disease elimination reactions cannot be recognized clearly at once, and it takes a process to distinguish them. If it is finally confirmed to be a disease elimination reaction, we cannot suppress it, but should take advantage of the situation to help the body expel the disease. However, if it is an adverse drug reaction, it needs to be actively dealt with, the drug must be stopped, and the adverse reactions that occur must be treated. The second is the reaction of the patient during the treatment. If the patient cannot tolerate it, or it causes great harm to the body, or even threatens his life, we should first consider the adverse drug reaction and actively treat it.
