In the past, it was widely distributed, but now it is rare, and it breeds in the coastal islands of Liaodong Peninsula, Shandong and Jiangsu. Breeding in Hainan Island was recorded in the past, and breeding in Hong Kong stopped in 198. The reason for the decline is that people collected their filamentous feathers at the end of last century, but the population has not fully recovered so far.
