As of early 2018, the main producing areas of bamboo fungus are: Gutian, Fujian, Zhijin County, Guizhou Province, and Yibin, Sichuan. In Ji Zhong, the total output of Dictyophora spinosae from Gutian is the largest, followed by the long skirt Dictyophora from Yibin, Sichuan, and finally the fragrant red Dictyophora from Zhijin, Guizhou. In terms of quality, each variety of bamboo fungus targets different consumer groups and the variety of bamboo fungus itself. Among them, the fragrant red bamboo fungus originating from Zhijin County, Guizhou Province is the best.

Dictyophora is also known as bamboo fungus and bamboo ginseng. There are four common and edible species: long-skirted bamboo fungus, short-skirted bamboo fungus, spiny-shaped bamboo fungus and red-shaped bamboo fungus. A kind of cryptofloral fungus at the root of dry bamboo. The shape is slightly like a net-shaped dry white snake skin. It has a dark green cap, a snow-white cylindrical stipe, a pink egg-shaped stipe, and a stipe at the top. The delicate white mesh skirt spreads downward from the cap.
