The Republic of Costa Rica (Spanish: La República de Costa Rica), referred to as Costa Rica, is a presidential republic in Latin America, bordering Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south.

Historical evolution

It was originally a settlement of Indians.

In 1502, C. Columbus discovered the coast of Costa Rica during his fourth voyage. Since then, Spanish colonists have invaded many times.

The city of Cartago was built in 1563, and Costa Rica became a Spanish colony and placed under the jurisdiction of the Guatemala Governorate. During the colonial period, under the brutal enslavement and oppression of Spanish colonists, the Indians were almost wiped out, and there was very little labor available for slavery. The Spaniards had to cultivate small pieces of land themselves to produce the agricultural products they needed. Costa Rica has long suffered from poverty, ignorance and isolation.

In the 1820s, the independence movement in Latin America surged, and Costa Rica declared independence in 1821.

Incorporated into the Iturbide Empire of Mexico in 1822.
