Reading Publishing House was founded in 1936 by Li Gongpu, Ai Siqi, Huang Luofeng, etc. Its predecessor was Reading Life, which was published in 1934, and it was renamed Reading Life Publishing House in 1937. Xinzhi Bookstore was founded in 1935 by Qian Junrui, Xu Xuehan, Hua Yingshen, etc. Its predecessor was China Rural Monthly.

From June, 1928, Life Weekly began publishing books, until October, 1948, when the three stores were formally merged, the three stores published more than 2, kinds of books and edited and published about 5 kinds of periodicals. The three stores have opened more than 1 branches in Shanghai, Hankou, Guangzhou, Xi 'an and Hong Kong.

After War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression's victory in p>1945, the three stores of life, reading and knowledge in Chongqing merged. In October 1948, the three bookstores merged in an all-round way, and the general management office of Life, Reading and New Knowledge Sanlian Bookstore was established in Hong Kong. In March 1949, the general management office moved to Beijing.

In August, 1951, Sanlian Bookstore was merged into People's Publishing House, and still published books in the name of Sanlian, and published works that were "not Marxism-Leninism" or "trying to use Marxism-Leninism but not yet proficient" as needed. In April, 1954, Sanlian was approved by the Central Committee to have its own editing room, which has six editorial groups, including China history, foreign history and geography.

In p>1979, Reading magazine was founded.

On January 1st, 1986, Sanlian Bookstore resumed its independent organizational system.

since the 198s, the publishing industry has been faced with a huge market temptation. Bookstores have always maintained the taste and characteristics of triple edition books, and at the same time, they have made active explorations and attempts to open up and develop the market, set up the Sanlian Reading Club, restored Reading Magazine and Life Weekly, and founded Philharmonic Magazine.

Since the end of 23, the operation of Sanlian Bookstore has been incongruous with Sanlian Tradition. For the sake of economic benefits, a large number of textbooks and supplementary books have been published, which violates the state regulations, and two magazines, Sanlian Financial Competitiveness, Talents and Wealth Edition and Reading China Civil Servants, have been published in the form of one issue and two issues, which are quite different from the original academic taste of the magazines. The behavior of the main leaders of Sanlian Bookstore caused public outrage, and many employees jointly drafted an open letter to express their worries about the current situation and prospects of Sanlian Bookstore.

On March 1st, 24, after the illegal operation of two periodicals and the open letter of employees were reported by the media, the triple storm caused great shock in the academic and publishing circles. Yang Jiang, Chen Lemin, Xu Jilin, Ge Zhaoguang, Chen Pingyuan, Zi Zhongyun, Shao Yanxiang and other writers and scholars have written articles to recall the old "Sanlian" and expressed their views and concerns about the "Sanlian Storm" in another way.

In April p>24, 42 private bookstores in China, such as Beijing Wansheng Bookstore and Shanghai Jifeng Bookstore, jointly submitted an Open Letter to Sanlian Bookstore and China Publishing Group, demanding that the general manager and editor-in-chief of Sanlian Bookstore be impeached, which triggered the Sanlian Defence War in China cultural circles. With the concerted efforts of people from all walks of life, Sanlian Bookstore held a staff meeting on September 14th, officially announcing the transfer of editor-in-chief Wang Jixian, and the 18-day "Sanlian Defence War" came to an end.
