On July 14, 2005, Zhichuang Peninsula successfully applied for the World Heritage, becoming the third world natural heritage in Japan after Baishenshan and Yakushima.
The word "SIRETOKO" comes from the language of the local aborigine Ainu, which means "the end of the earth". Zhichuang Peninsula is located in the northeast of Hokkaido Island, Japan, near the Sea of Okhotsk. This is the lowest latitude sea area in the world. For a long time, active ocean movements and volcanic activities have created a unique natural ecological landscape here.
Zhichuang Peninsula was established as a national park by Japan as early as 1964, and this time it was included in the world natural heritage, including Zhichuang Peninsula and the sea area within 3 kilometers from the coast, with a total area of 7 1 000 hectares. In its comments, UNESCO called it a "scarce ecological zone produced by the interaction between ocean and land".
The first reason for the success of Zhichuang Peninsula's application for World Heritage is the wonderful floating ice phenomenon here. From winter to spring, fresh water from Heilongjiang flows into the Sea of Okhotsk through tatar strait. The collision of broken ice blocks makes the huge ocean current move southward to Zhichuang, where it meets the warm current from the Pacific Ocean, forming a spectacular ice flow phenomenon. Zhichuang Peninsula is also the southernmost limit that Arctic ice floes can reach.
In addition, Zhichuang Peninsula is also covered with vast virgin forest, and the inaccessible virgin forest has become a natural paradise for wild animals. There are only more than 5,000 rare animals in the Far East Pacific, of which more than 2,000 go to Zhichuang Peninsula for the winter every year.
It is also the habitat of the endangered Japanese bird island owl. In addition, the sea area of Zhichuang Peninsula is rich in marine plankton, which attracts a large number of fish and becomes a famous natural fishing ground in Japan. Brown bears and sea cormorants also like the seafood here very much. Zhichuang Peninsula is the place with the largest number of brown bears in Japan, and the scene of flocks of sea cormorants hovering along the coast is the local representative landscape.
Of course, for tourists, the most famous scenery of Zhichuang Peninsula is the eight scenic spots of Zhichuang-Shuangmei Waterfall, Prospect Terrace, Sunset Terrace, Yinv Waterfall and Zhichuang Five Lakes.
As the name implies, the sunset terrace is an excellent place to watch the sunset on Zhichuang Peninsula. Because it is located in the corner of the peninsula, it is also a holy place for many couples to visit. A female waterfall makes the "waterfall into the sea" an amazing sight in the world: the snow and rain of Zhichuang Mountain seep into the ground, pour out here, and fall directly into the Sea of Okhotsk almost vertically from the cliff more than 100 meters high. Because the water flow of the waterfall is not large, the scattered scene is like a girl crying, so it is also called "girl's tears". Zhichuang Five Lakes are like five pearls scattered in the virgin forest. There are walkways around the five lakes for tourists to watch at close range. Autumn is the most beautiful season for Zhichuang Five Lakes. The red leaves and peaks around Zhichuang Group are reflected in the water, and the quiet lake is like a natural oil painting.
