Background of Wuhou Temple
Wuhou Temple is an ancestral hall commemorating Zhuge Liang, the prime minister of the Shu Han Dynasty during the Three Kingdoms period in China. Zhuge Liang was named the Marquis of Wuxiang during his lifetime. And got its name.
In August 234 AD, Zhuge Liang became ill due to overwork and died at Wuzhangyuan on the front line of the Northern Expedition. He was fifty-four years old. Zhuge Liang was the prime minister of the Shu Han Dynasty. He was named "Wuxianghou" during his lifetime. After his death, he was posthumously named "Zhongwuhou" by Liu Chan, the later leader of the Shu Han Dynasty. Therefore, historically, his temple was honored as "Wuhou Temple".
According to the records of "Three Kingdoms", after Liu Bei died of illness in Baidi City in 223 AD, his coffin was transported back to Chengdu and buried here. It was called Huiling in history. According to the Han system, if there is a mausoleum, there must be a temple, so at the same time, the Han Zhaolie Temple was born. Around the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Chengdu Wuhou Temple was merged with Huiling Temple and Han Zhaolie Temple.
