Spring Festival customs in Longyan, Fujian

On the first day of the first lunar month

Every family opens the door at an auspicious time, sets off firecrackers, burns incense and lights candles. To worship their ancestors, men, women, old and young dress up in new clothes and say auspicious words to each other. In a building where families live together, first ask the luckiest person to open the door and say "open the door, good luck"; when they walk out of the door, they say "you will gain from everything" and set off long hanging firecrackers; then, every family opens the kitchen door, Set off firecrackers and say nice things. Breakfast is generally vegetarian, including reunion soup balls, red dates, peanuts, and glutinous rice. People don’t clean, don’t do laundry, don’t carry water. Children set off firecrackers for fun, and adults went from house to house to congratulate them. To entertain relatives and friends who come to pay New Year greetings, most families display candies, peanuts, sugar cane, kumquats, sweet dates, plums, raisins, etc. Hakkas prepare meatballs, chicken, lean meat, tea eggs, and rice wine for their guests, which are called "eating soup glutinous rice dumplings", and they are dedicated to making people drunk until they are drunk.

Second day of junior high school

I went back to my parents’ home to visit relatives and was warmly entertained by my Yue family. Longyan and Zhangping began to use poached eggs and dried powder as snacks before having banquets. If it is a newlywed, it will be even more grand.

Third grade of junior high school

Longyan urban and rural performances include tea lantern picking and lion dance. Lion dance, boat lanterns, dragon lanterns, drums, gongs and drums, and folk artists' "New Year drum playing" are popular in Hakka people. On this day, Hakka people cook and eat the "New Year's rice" which is used to worship gods and ancestors during the New Year. This day is also known as "Send the Poor Day", that is, the garbage at home is regarded as "poor ghosts" and swept out. The family is unwilling to go out and does not welcome guests.

The fifth day of the lunar month

Longyan and Zhangping call it "the fifth day of the lunar month", and Hakka people call it "kaixiaozheng". Start "praying to God" to pray for peace and prosperity throughout the year, burn the curtain paper hanging on the door, and go to the Hangzhou City Chamber from the fifth to the tenth day of the lunar month. The whole family will gather for a banquet on a day, each eating a plate of red eggs, and encouraging each other with auspicious words . On this day, you can pick urine and poke, and do small farm work. In some places, traditional activities to welcome gods begin. There is a popular proverb in Liancheng that says: "On the first day of the lunar month, there is an ancestor, on the second day of the lunar month, on the third day of the lunar month, there is a wild son-in-law on the fourth day of the lunar month (referring to the third and fourth lunar days, it is late to pay New Year greetings), on the fifth and sixth day of the lunar month, there is wine but no meat (it means it is even later)". In fact, people often play until the middle of the first lunar month. A Hakka proverb goes: "If you have something to eat or nothing to eat, let's chat (play) until the twentieth day of the first lunar month."
