The origin and history of Xiaoxi Street are as follows: Xiaoxi Street is a place where famous families, wealthy businessmen and officials of Huzhou’s past dynasties have gathered. Huzhou’s famous surnames such as Wen, Niu, Xu, Mo and Feng all live here.
Together they created the prosperous scene of Xiaoxi Street.
Xiaoxi Street is built along Caodu, a tributary of Qingyuan Gate, where Xitiao River flows into the west gate of the ancient city of Huzhou.
The north side of the Caodu River is the Qinlao Street area, and the south side is the Xiaoxi Street area. The two areas are connected by Yongan Bridge.
Its scope extends from Hongqi Road to the north, Beiqi Lane and Taiping Lane to the south, Huancheng West Road to the west, and South Street to the east. It has an irregular shape.
The texture of the streets and lanes is well preserved. There are ten lanes in the block, including Huayuan Lane, Muqiao North Lane, Tongguqiao Lane, Zhakou Lane, Muqiao South Lane, Gaoxiang, Youche Lane, Shiluan Lane, Beiqi Lane, and Chaoyang Lane.
Many alleys.
There is a Shikumen in front of the mansion and a river port in the back. There are foyers, courtyards, halls, lanes, etc. in the courtyard. It has a strong atmosphere of urban life in the Jiangnan water town.
In the block, there are 5 provincial and municipal cultural protection units including Niu's Zhuangyuan Hall (Benrentang, Li Detang), Yang's House, Xu's House, Wen's House, the Second Military Division Guest House, Shen's House, Mo's House, and Shen's Xiaoyin Villa.
There are 5 cultural heritage sites and 10 historical buildings such as Xu Zhai and Qiu Zhai.
Benrentang, Xiaoxi Street, Niuzhai, is Niu's old residence. It is across the river from Lide Hall (i.e. Niu's Zhuangyuan Hall), and the two places are connected by Yong'an Bridge.
In March 1998, Benrentang on Xiaoxi Street was rated as a Huzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
In April 2003, Niu's Zhuangyuan Hall (including Ben Ren Tang and Yong'an Bridge) was recommended by the Huzhou Municipal People's Government as a provincial cultural relic protection unit.
In 2018, the Xiaoxi Street Maker Space, which is based on the provincial cultural heritage site Niujia Benrentang, was officially opened to the public. It combines Chinese ancient architectural elements with modern design to interpret the old street maker space and Jiangnan Courtyard business office space with the characteristics of Lake City.

There is a large house with four bays and three bays on Xiaoxi Street of Xu Zhai. It is built along the river and is magnificent.
He is Baoshutang, the founder of Xu Yunong, a Confucian businessman in the late Qing Dynasty.
Xu Yunong once served as the magistrate of Jurong and Zhenze counties in Jiangsu Province. When the Westernization Movement emerged, Xu Yunong abandoned his official position and entered business. He did not forget his knowledge and was an outstanding representative of Huzhou's Confucian businessmen.
In 2017, the Xiaoxi Street History and Humanities Museum was established in Baoshutang. It has witnessed the historical changes of Xiaoxi Street through three sections: "Tracing the origin of the neighborhood, prominent families, and the people of Wufu and Yin".
The museum also displays classic old objects such as Caodu Gate and Qingyuan Gate, Huzhou mirrors produced in the Southern Song Dynasty, Hu brushes and feather fans produced in Huzhou.
