It was not until the villagers gradually moved back after the Japanese surrender in 1945 that these herons returned to their nests in groups and continued to live next to the village.

Occasionally, when a goshawk invades, several healthy herons will rise up to chase it away, while tens of thousands of herons will chirp in unison to express their condemnation.

Huangji Village belongs to Sangtang District. The streets, rivers and fish ponds in the village are intertwined. The land of plenty provides a good living environment for herons. However, the development of industrial society has had an impact on the surroundings of Bird Island. The north side of Bird Island is more than 800 meters away.

The traffic on Longgao Highway in the distance is busy and noisy. Watching birds flying in the evening, the high-voltage lines and chimneys of distant factories are vaguely visible. Bird Island is like an independent piece of pure land on earth, which seems lonely and more precious.

All the villagers in the village consciously protect the herons on weekdays. Pan, a 79-year-old man who grew up in the village, has the most affection for the herons. If he is not taking care of his vegetable plot, he will always wander around the bamboo forest and see tourists.

He said that we would not object to seeing the birds, but we would not agree to frighten the birds.

With its egret paradise, Huangji Village was rated as one of the first batch of ecological demonstration villages in Guangdong Province in 1999.
