Prose: Parents’ Small Bowl of Dishes

Zhao Zili When I was on annual leave last month, I drove back to my hometown.

Every time I go home, it’s a feast, and this time is no exception.

When my parents heard that I was going home, they had already prepared various dishes, as if I were a guest.

While my mother was cooking, I helped add some firewood and chatted with her about interesting things.

I found that although my mother cooked a variety of dishes, the portions were small and all were served in small bowls, which seemed a bit stingy.

I opened the cupboard and saw that the large bowls I used before were all placed on the lower level of the cupboard. It seemed that my parents had been using small bowls for some time.

"Serve all the dishes in small bowls. Isn't this the way my family treats guests?" I asked my mother jokingly.

"Yes, the village has long issued an initiative to encourage everyone to save food. Recently, small bowls of vegetables have become popular, and every household is like this," said the mother. "We no longer raise pigs at home, so the leftovers

It’s a pity that the leftovers were thrown away, and I felt bad about it, so I fried less and tried to finish every meal so that it wouldn’t be wasted. “Oh, that’s it, I thought it was for some other reason.

During lunch, my father brought my uncle and aunt over to eat together, which was all farm side dishes.

Everyone chatted while eating, and the small bowls of dishes on the table were put on the table to "sweep the fallen leaves in the autumn wind." Except for a bowl of salted cowpeas, everything else was finished. My father said happily, "There is another CD operation."

"This initiative in the village is really good. Every family uses small bowls, which will save a lot of food in a year." The uncle said with deep feeling.

After dinner, my father and uncle talked about mulberry and hemp crops over tea and discussed the autumn sowing, hoping to take advantage of the empty land to plant some cash crops to increase their income.

“I heard that the village will distribute free hybrid rapeseed seedlings, which are not only high-yielding but also drought-tolerant,” my father said.

"Then let's clear out the land while the weather is fine. Vegetable oil has been very popular in recent years." The uncle took over.

Everyone talked about autumn sowing one after another, discussed some experiences, did some household chores, and "showed off" the results of the autumn harvest.

I went to the storage room and took a look. Thousands of kilograms of rice were dried, stuffed into sacks, and stacked neatly.

The peanuts haven't been pressed for oil yet, and there are dozens of bags of them, large and small.

There is also a lot of corn, which is hung all over the bamboo poles.

There are also chestnuts and sweet potatoes, piled together, exuding the smell of autumn.

The old saying is true. If there is food at home, there will be no panic. No wonder my father and the others talked and laughed so calmly.

"The income is increasing year by year, but we must develop the habit of saving food." My father said sincerely while I was washing the dishes.

I washed the small bowls cleanly, chewed on my father's words, and thought about "smoothing" a few small bowls to the city.

From then on, the small bowl of vegetables bloomed like a flower on my dining table and has always bloomed in my heart.
