Brief introduction to the story
The background of the story is 1927, the eve when Nazi ideas began to spread in Europe. A lovely Jewish girl (Claudia Landduke) lives in a remote village with the singer's father and grandmother. In the shadow of possible persecution, her father decided to go to the United States to find a job and then take over the whole family. Just after he left, the village was ransacked. The girl broke away from the fleeing crowd and came to England after several twists and turns. She was only six years old at that time.
From the moment she left her native land, she lost her original name, and abandoned children are generally waiting on a long list to be given a new name. A childless couple adopted her and renamed her Susie (Christina Ricci). Soon, they found that she inherited her father's musical talent, so they sent her to an art school to learn singing. Susie learns English by singing. From then on, there was one less Russian girl named Fegeler and one more English girl named Susan.
Her name was taken away and her nationality was changed. Even her native language will be deeply hidden in an unknown corner from now on, and this is still not her world. Whether people are friendly or mocking her, she can't understand. When gypsy's carriage passed by the school gate and she was singing that old song, I saw the word vagrancy, which has been tightly wrapped around her.
Ten years later, Susie left home for Paris, got a job in the choir and became good friends with the beautiful Russian dancer Lola (played by Cate Blanchett). There, no one knows her Jewish identity, and Susie is bent on saving enough money to go to America, hoping to find her father one day and get rid of the shadow of the Nazis.
Susie and Lola found new jobs in a newly opened theater, where they both found their love. The ambitious Lola is eyeing the rich and vulgar singer Danti (john turturro), while the quiet Susie falls in love with the young gypsy horse trainer Cesar (Johnny Depp). However, when Susie fell in love, she found that Cesar was a supporter of genocide. As a Jew, Susie is in a dilemma. Nazi soldiers stepped into Paris day by day, and the threat of death gradually approached Susie. She had to choose between Cesar, who loved deeply but was in favor of Nazi genocide, and a new life that escaped from the shadows and pursued freedom.
Music plays an important role in this film. Arias in Bicai's Opera Pearl Pickers
