Xichang is the capital of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture.
Xichang has a long history. It has been an economic, political, military and cultural center in southwest China since ancient times, and it is also a pearl on the Southern Silk Road.
During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, the Qiang people established their own "Qiong" tribe here. Starting from the Qin and Han Dynasties, the central dynasty set up counties and appointed officials to manage it.
After liberation, it became the seat of the Xichang Prefecture. In 1978, with the approval of the State Council, the Xichang area was abolished and merged into Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, becoming Xichang City, the seat of the state capital.
