Urumqi, commonly known as Urumqi and formerly Dihua, is the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the political, economic, cultural, scientific, educational and transportation center of Xinjiang. The city covers an area of 14,216.3 square kilometers and governs 7 districts and 1 county. At the end of 214, the resident population was 3.53 million. "Urumqi" is Mongolian, meaning "beautiful pasture". [1]
Urumqi is located in the northwest of China, in the hinterland of Eurasia, and adjacent to Central Asian countries. It is called "the capital of Asia" and has been an important hub for communication between East and West since ancient times. Today, it is a large city (2,5 kilometers) which is the most inland and farthest from the ocean and coastline in the world.
Urumqi has a long history. As early as the Neolithic period, human beings lived here. In 1763, Qianlong expanded its fortification and called it Dihua. Dihua became the capital of Xinjiang Province in 1884, and has since become the political center of Xinjiang. In 1954, Dihua was renamed Urumqi. Urumqi is a multi-ethnic city with 13 indigenous nationalities and 49 ethnic minorities. [2-3]
