Playing with the picture book "Reunion"

Recently, I participated in the picture book reading volunteer training organized by the Shanghai Women's Federation, and I strongly agree with the concept that "picture books are for playing, not for reading."

Recently I selected the picture book "Reunion" and explored several ways of playing it for readers to explore. If you play it correctly, it is the credit of the organizer and the training teacher; if you play it wrong, it is the author who did not study seriously.

"Reunion" has always had a good reputation in the industry. It has Chinese characteristics and gives people a simple and warm feeling.

I have purchased "Reunion" for a long time, and my children (now 3 and a half years old) have always liked it.

Familiarity with story content is also beneficial to parent-child interaction.

When you first start a new picture book or after you have shelved the picture book for a long time, you still need to familiarize yourself with the content of the picture book through "reading".

How to read it?

Read with questions.

There are two methods commonly used by the author:

The first is to find similar elements. For example,

"When mom is reading, can you help me find the little by little patterns? Like the sheets on the cover, little by little, like the furry clothes, little by little like the snowflakes. Dots..."

You can also sort them by color, asking the children to find white ones, red ones, etc.

You can also extend the question and ask the children to think about things at home with this pattern, color or shape, or describe the same things that have happened, such as making glutinous rice balls, riding on dad's head, Watch the dragon dance, build a snowman, etc.

However, try to ask these extended questions after reading the entire picture book. On the one hand, it is helpful to review the content of the story, and on the other hand, it can also ensure the completeness of the reading.

The second method is counting. For example,

"How many ducks are there in the river?"

"How many glutinous rice balls have Dad made?"

"How many dragon lanterns are there?" < /p>

The purpose of asking questions is not to get the answers correct, but to let the children focus on the picture books, give them a sense of participation in reading, increase their interest in reading, and stimulate their desire to read independently. Therefore, there should not be too many questions. The author’s experience is that 1-3 questions at a time is enough for a picture book.

There are also skills in asking questions.

If you are still asking: "What is this story about? How is this story? What did they do in the story?" Such questions will definitely make the child confused, which will also reduce his understanding of the story. Interest in reading.

When asking questions to children, the first and most important thing is to be simple and clear. For example,

On the page where Maomao and Dad are making glutinous rice balls, if you ask "What did they do?", the children will either look at you with blank eyes, or they will say incoherently whether there are any dumplings. Yes, because the problem is so big that they are at a loss.

You can ask more clearly, for example,

"How many glutinous rice balls did Dad make? What shape are the glutinous rice balls that Dad made?"

"Maomao I made a few glutinous rice balls. What are the shapes of the glutinous rice balls made by Maomao? "

"Do you prefer the glutinous rice balls made by Dad or the glutinous rice balls made by Maomao? "

Ask open questions and less closed questions.

That is to say, try to ask as few questions as possible, such as whether it is right, right, good or not, which can be answered in one or two words. Ask more questions that require children to describe.

Asking a question is often more important than solving a problem. When reading picture books to your children, remind yourself not to forget to ask questions that are appropriate for your children!

When reading picture books, the physical meaning of the words is often overlooked.

In other words, after reading a story, the reader will first think of letting the children understand what abstract concepts such as family, friendship, and emotions are, but neglect to let the children understand what high and low, big and small are. , fat and thin, far and near, up and down and other physical concepts.

The main reason here is that adults unconsciously use their own knowledge to view children, thinking that they should all know it, but they forget that these most common physical knowledge actually requires repetition. It can be learned through repeated attempts.

The only way for children to acquire knowledge is through the experience of their hands and body, that is, "playing".

In terms of building children's physics concepts, log building blocks are highly recommended. My children usually play a lot with, in addition to building blocks, Lego and magnetic pieces.

While reading "Reunion", the three of them can play different games. For example,

You can use log building blocks to build a Maomao family house. If the children are more interested, You can also set up the scene on the dragon lantern dance page.

You can use Lego to make a dad and a Maomao, which will not fall apart when they walk around, or you can make a dragon lantern to play with.

You can use magnetic sheets to make snowflakes, snowmen, small bridges, etc.

My way of playing is to tell the story first, and then choose a scene, such as the scene of Dad getting a haircut, and prepare the base paper (I prefer black), colored paper, children's scissors, glue, and watercolor pens in advance. , colored clay, and then guide the children to make a portrait of their father.

Because my child is relatively young, I usually help him draw his father’s face, then help him cut some scraps of paper and glue them into hair, and then inspire him to draw his father’s facial features, a beard, etc. . Then use colored clay to make a body for dad. Because it is surrounded by white barber hair, it is very simple. Just roll the painted head on top or insert it on top.

This kind of gameplay is euphemistically called a creative art class in early childhood education institutions. It is said to be beneficial to sensory integration training and the development of small muscles in the hands. A class outside is very expensive. However, if a child over 3 years old like us comes up with a relatively good-looking work, please don’t doubt that most of it must have been done by the teacher. Being so ugly that you have no friends is what you should be at this age, except for gifted children.

So, don’t worry about not doing well. This is a game in itself. Both adults and children are participants. It is not a teacher-student relationship. The purpose of the game is to stimulate children's hands-on ability and interest in reading, not the completion of the work.

In addition, if you use colored clay, you can also make glutinous rice balls in this book.

Safety education should be done while making glutinous rice balls. In the story, my father put a coin into the glutinous rice balls. I usually affirm the custom when I am playing with colored clay making glutinous rice balls or talking about this page. At the same time, children will also be told that it is very dangerous to eat coins in their mouths. They will knock out their teeth and cause stomachaches if they are eaten. One day, the child suddenly said to me seriously: "Mom, I finally thought of a way. We can cut a piece of banana and put it in the glutinous rice balls. It is like a coin. This way, we will not go to the hospital after eating it. It's surgery." I think he must have listened.

Determine the theme, select songs as accompaniment, and discover the children’s interests and teach songs. For example,

According to the theme of New Year, find some songs such as "Happy New Year", "New Year's Arrival", "Congratulations" and other songs for him to listen to as background music;

According to the theme of snow, , find Chinese and English children's songs such as "Edelweiss" and "Little Snowflake" for him to listen to.

If children have something they particularly like, you can take the opportunity to teach it.

Our child likes "little snowflake" better. I will cut a few small snowflakes and teach him a few words while playing. Soon he can hum a few words.

Role-playing tests children’s imagination and memory. If adults are invested enough, children will also have a lot of fun.

For adults, this method of playing is also quite labor-saving and can be repeated indefinitely.

Take the way my children and I play as an example:

First, ask the children to choose the characters first, and then choose the characters themselves.

Children only need to be responsible for the lines and actions of their own characters, and adults need to be responsible for other remaining parts, as well as reminding children of tasks.

It would be best if the children can imagine all the scenes. If not, you still need to prepare a few key props.

For example, the scene where Dad gets his hair cut (without props). I played Maomao first, and the child played the father. He would tell all the father's lines in the book under my hint. Then I play the role of the barber, and I use all the barber shop routines, from "Welcome" to "Thank you for coming."

Among them, I would also deliberately ask: "Sir, what kind of haircut do you need?" The first time, he was not used to it, so he would point to the father in the book and say, "I will have this haircut." I played it twice. From then on, he started to cut his hair this way and that, and he could describe the hairstyle he wanted. Then when I left, I would never forget the gesture of giving money and saying, "Thank you, you did a great job cutting, I will come again next time." In short, it is a great way to add drama to yourself.

The biggest experience when playing role-playing is that children can quickly remember their lines and action sequences, and they can remember them for a long time. He will observe the other party's performance, and the next time he plays that role, he can apply the new things he observes.

A picture book can eliminate a boring summer, make the relationship between parents and children closer, and make children fall in love with reading.
