The customs of Dragon Boat Festival include eating zongzi, dragon boat racing, hanging wormwood, eating five-poison cake and ordering realgar wine. Among them, dragon boat racing and eating zongzi are two major customs of the Dragon Boat Festival, which have been passed down in China since ancient times and have never stopped.

1, eat zongzi

In ancient times, in order to sacrifice Qu Yuan who threw himself into the river, people in Jingchu would cook glutinous rice or steam rice cakes and throw them into the river on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Fearing that fish would eat them, people came up with the idea of wrapping rice with rice leaves and colored silk. Later, eating zongzi became the custom of the Dragon Boat Festival. In old Beijing, Zongzi is made of glutinous rice, yellow rice and jujube, commonly known as "Mill Zongzi".

2. Dragon Boat Race

Legend has it that Chu people used dragon boats to disperse the fish in the river to prevent the fish from eating Qu Yuan's body. The ancients set the fish mark, duck mark and iron mark at the end of the dragon boat race. Whoever gets these three points will win the third place in the championship. In order to let the contestants see the finish line from a distance, the ancients also tied bows with brocade on three labels.

Step 3 hang wormwood

On the Dragon Boat Festival, people regard inserting wormwood and calamus as one of the important contents. Every household should sweep the courtyard, put calamus and moxa sticks in the eyebrows of the door and hang them in the main room. Acorus calamus, Folium Artemisiae Argyi, Liu Hua, Garlic and Dragon Boat Flower are made into human or tiger shapes, which are called Ai Ren and Ai Hu. It is made into garlands and decorations, beautiful and fragrant, and women compete to wear it to ward off evil spirits.

4. Eat five poisonous cakes

The Dragon Boat Festival is approaching the summer solstice, the weather is getting hotter and hotter, bacteria are breeding, and people are prone to heatstroke and illness, so the ancients ate Wudu cake to get rid of illness and strengthen their health. The five poisons refer to scorpions, toads, geckos, centipedes and snakes. The ancients put their own images on cakes, and the fillings were also "five fillings": cherry, water chestnut, mulberry, apricot and glutinous rice lotus root. It is said that eating poisonous cakes can enhance resistance, kill insects and avoid disasters.

Step 5 order realgar wine

Realgar is also a kind of medicinal material, which is said to kill all kinds of poisons.

Therefore, during the Dragon Boat Festival, ancient people would soak realgar in wine and smear realgar wine on children's ears, nose, forehead, wrists and ankles. It is said that this practice can keep mosquitoes, snakes, scorpions, centipedes, geckos and spiders away from the body.
