The bark is dark gray and irregularly cracked when it is old; Branchlets have oval holes. Leaf leathery; Oblong-lanceolate, 7 ~12cm long and 2.5 ~ 4cm wide, with a tapering apex, a rounded base, a slight inclination, sparse beneficial serrations on the upper edge, and about 10 pairs of lateral veins; Petiole length 1 ~ 2 cm. Flowers are small, unisexual and hermaphrodite; Male flowers are green and white, arranged in erect branched spikes and gathered at the top of branchlets; Each female flower is hidden in the involucre and arranged in a short spike shape; The involucre is about 2.5 cm in diameter, with dense antlers and spikes outside. It splits when it matures and contains a nut. Nuts are nearly ovoid, about 12 mm long, and yellow-brown. Flowers bloom in summer.
The shell of this plant (Castanea henryi shell) is also used for medicine.
